Ahoada West

Ahoada West [1] (also spelt Ahuda West) is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, located Northwest of Port Harcourt. It was extracted in 1996 from the old Ahoada Local Government that makes up the present Orashi Region of Rivers State. Its seat is in the town of Akinima.

The Local Government Area (LGA) comprises the Ekpeyes (Ubies and Ibuduyas), Engenni and Ogbogolo communities. Thus there are three distinct languages namely, Ekpeye, Engenni and Ogbogolo.

The Orashi River criss-crosses the entire Local Government area and its vegetation is mainly a high dense rain forest. Thus, the occupations of the people are mainly farming, fishing, and hunting.[ citation needed ]

Ahoada West Local Government Area is bounded by the following LGAs; Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Abua/Odua Local Government Area, Ahoada East Local Government Area on the east, we have Besini and Yenagoa both of Bayelsa State on the North and West respectively. The boundary between Rivers and Bayelsa States from the west is located at Engenni.

Ekpeye people, also known as Ekpeye Kingdom, is a tribe of the Igbo people in Rivers State, Niger Delta, Nigeria. They are predominantly found in Ahoada East and some in Ahoada West Local Government Areas in Rivers State. Ahoada is an Ekpeye city in Rivers, Nigeria.

Ahoada is a city in Orashi Region of Rivers State, Nigeria, located northwest of Port Harcourt. In Ahoada, the Ekpeye language is majorly spoken, though there are other languages in Ahoada like: Engenni, Ogba, Ukwu Ani and Ikwerre.

Sagbama is a Local Government Area in Bayelsa State, Southern part of Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Sagbama. Part of the area of the LGA lies within the Bayelsa National Forest.

Dẹgẹma is an Edoid language spoken in two separate communities on Degema Island in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, by about 120,000 people, according to 1991 census figures. The two communities are Usokun-Degema and Degema Town in the Degema Local Government Area in Rivers State. Each community speaks a mutually intelligible variety of Dẹgẹma, known by the names of the communities speaking them: the Usokun variety and the Degema Town variety. Both varieties are similar in their phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic properties.

The Engenni people live in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. They are considered to be Edoid based on linguistic grounds. They live in close proximity with Ijaw people. They primarily live in Ahoada west local government area of Rivers state, Nigeria. Although they consider themselves to be Engenni, the Engenni speak an Edoid language. Alagoa (2003) said: “---The penetration of the Niger-Delta by Edoid groups extends to the Epie-Atissa and Engenni of the central and Eastern Niger-Delta----The Epie, along with the Ogbia and other groups of the central and eastern Niger-Delta, are historically united with the Ijaw.” The other groups of the central and eastern Niger-Delta which Professor Ebiegberi Alagoa said that were historically united with the Ijaw, include the Engenni, as shown from his narrative above. The Engenni have close relations with neighbouring Ijaw tribes such as the Zarama and Epie-Atissa.

Odual is a poorly studied Central Delta language spoken by the Odual community in the Abua–Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State and Ogbia LGA of Bayelsa State, Nigeria.

Ogba–Egbema–Ndoni is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, in South-South Nigeria under Rivers West Senatorial District, with its headquarters at Omoku. With about 258,700 People according to 2006 Census. It is bounded by Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Anambra States and also by Ahoada West, Ahoada East and Emohua Local Government Areas of Rivers State. They are part of the Igbo speaking Areas of Rivers State with three Tribes starting with Ogba as the dominant tribe with 12 legislative wards, the Egbema and Ndoni people who are also found in Ogbaru L.G.A and Ukwuani L.G.A both with 2&3 legislative wards respectively. It is majorly upland and home to the highest upstream Oil and Gas exploration/exploitation activity in the State since early 1960's with about 12 mining/producing fields operated by AGIP, Total Energies and Shell/NPDC with many other reserve/untapped fields. It is part of the Ogba / Egbema / Ndoni / Ahoada West constituency of the Nigerian House of Representatives. Hon. Vincent Job is the Executive Chairman of ONELGA.

Ahoada East is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, located northwest of Port Harcourt. Its seat is in the city of Ahoada. Towns in Ahoada East include Odiabidi.

Ogbia is a traditional Kingdom and Local Government Area of Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The headquarters of both the Traditional Kingdom and Local Government is located in Ogbia Town at 4°39′00″N6°16′00″E.

Ekpeye is one of many languages spoken in Rivers State, Nigeria. According to Roger Blench, Ekpeye is classified as an Igboid language. Although an Igboid language, Ekpeye has evolved to a very distinct Igboid language that is phonologically different from other Igboid languages. The Engenni, Ogba and Ikwerre languages are closely related to Ekpeye. Ekpeye has many mutually intelligible dialects.

Martyns Ibipulo Mannah, is a Nigerian state-level politician. He was elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2015, and represents the constituency of Ahoada East I as a member of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party.

Princewill Ogbogbula is the current Commissioner of Youth Development in the Executive Council of Rivers State. He was appointed to the position in 2015 by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.

Rt. Hon. Ehie Ogerenye Edison MHA is a Nigerian politician was former Deputy Speaker, former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and currently the chief of staff, government house, Port Harcourt. He was elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2015, and re-elected in the rerun election in 2016 and 2019 and represents the constituency of Ahoada East II under the platform of the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party.

The Anglican Diocese of Ahoada is one of twelve within the Anglican Province of the Niger Delta, itself one of 14 provinces within the Church of Nigeria. The current bishop is Clement Ekpeye.

The 2023 Nigerian presidential election in Rivers State will be held on 25 February 2023 as part of the nationwide 2023 Nigerian presidential election to elect the president and vice president of Nigeria. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterward on 11 March.

Ogwu Ekpeye is a new yam festival traditionally celebrated by Ekpeye tribe in Rivers State. It is celebrated yearly before the new yams are eaten and in the honour of the first daughters.
