Ajay Maken (born 12 January 1964) is a Member of Parliament,representing the Indian National Congress party. He is the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). [1] Maken has been formerly a minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [2] and also a minister in the cabinet of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
He has been thrice [3] elected as a Member of the Parliament of India,and three times to the Delhi Legislative Assembly. He was the President of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. [4]
Maken now a Three time Member Parliament of India,has been a two-time Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2014) [5] and is elected for the third time [6] as Member Parliament of India Rajya Sabha in Feb 2024 [6] [7] and has been three-time Member of Legislative Assembly of Delhi (from 1993 to 2004).
At the National level,Maken was the youngest Union Cabinet Minister from the Congress Party for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (2012–13), [8] [9] Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Sports and Youth Affairs (2011–12), [10] Union Minister of State for Home Affairs (2009–2011), [11] Union Minister of State for Urban Development (2006–2007). [12]
At the State level,he was Speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly (2003–04) [13] at the age of 39,Maken was the youngest Speaker in the Country,a Cabinet Minister of Power,Transport and Tourism (2001-2003) at the age of 37,the youngest until that time and Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit (1998-2001).
Maken was the first NSUI candidate in a direct election to be elected as the President of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in 1985, [14] the first B.Sc. Chemistry (Hons.) final year student in this post. [4]
In the 2004 general election,Maken represented the Congress for the New Delhi constituency. He defeated a sitting Cabinet Minister,Jagmohan,from the Bharatiya Janata Party. [15]
In the 2009 general elections,he retained the New Delhi Parliamentary constituency. He was appointed the Minister of State for Home Affairs.[ citation needed ]
In 2011,Maken was appointed the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs [16] after the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam,replacing M. S. Gill as Sports Minister. [17]
He was appointed Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (I/C) in 2012. [18]
Maken was defeated in the 2014 general elections by the BJP candidate Meenakshi Lekhi. He served as the Congress General Secretary until 2015,when he resigned after the party's failure to win any seat in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election. [19]
Ajay Maken is married and has three children. He received his education in St. Xavier's School,Delhi. [20] Lalit Maken,Ajay Maken's uncle,was elected to Lok Sabha in 1984 but was assassinated in 1985 for his alleged role in the massacre of Sikhs in Delhi in November 1984. [21]
The Rajya Sabha,constitutionally the Council of States,is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India. As of 2023,it has a maximum membership of 250,of which 238 are elected by the legislatures of the states and union territories using single transferable votes through open ballots,while the president can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art,literature,science,and social service. The total allowed capacity is 250 according to article 80 of the Indian Constitution. The current potential seating capacity of the Rajya Sabha is 245,after the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Act,2019,the seats came down to 245. The maximum seats of 250 members can be filled up at the discretion and requirements of the house of Rajya Sabha.

Jagmohan Malhotra,known by the mononym Jagmohan,was an Indian civil servant and politician. After working with the Indian National Congress,he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1995. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Goa,as the 5th Governor of Jammu and Kashmir,and for three terms as Member of Parliament for New Delhi. In the cabinet,he served as Union Minister for Urban Development and Tourism.
Subburaman Thirunavukkarasar is an Indian politician. He was the State President of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee till 2 February 2019 and former secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) of the Indian National Congress (INC) party. His introduction to politics in 1977 was facilitated by former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,M. G. Ramachandran. Ramachandran founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 and was facing his first elections for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election in 1977. He identified Thirunavukkarasar,a lawyer by profession,to contest the Aranthangi assembly constituency. Thirunavukkarasar won the seat,aged 27,and was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He continued in that capacity till 1980. Subsequently,he served as Tamil Nadu state minister from 1980 to 1987 in the MGR cabinet,holding portfolios that included Industries,Housing Board,Excise and Handlooms. Later,he became a member of the Lok Sabha –the lower house of the Parliament of India –when he won the erstwhile Pudukottai Lok Sabha constituency. He served as Union Minister of state for shipping and later for telecommunications and information technology.
