Alan Cross is a Canadian radio broadcaster and a writer on music. [1] Based in Toronto, Ontario, he is best known nationally and internationally as host of the syndicated radio series The Ongoing History of New Music , [2] The Secret History of Rock, [3] and ExploreMusic. In 2013, he started the Geeks & Beats podcast with BNN's Michael Hainsworth.

Background

Originally from the small prairie town of Stonewall, Manitoba, [4] Cross began his radio career with the University of Winnipeg's campus radio station, CKUW, in 1980. [5] He subsequently joined radio stations in Selkirk, Kenora and Brandon before returning to Winnipeg's CHIQ.

Career

He joined CFNY on October 3, 1986, as an overnight announcer. [5]

In 1989, Cross became the station's afternoon drive-time host. [6] The following year, he moved to the 10 a.m.-2 p.m. slot; in 1993, he returned to afternoon drive and remained there until 2001. [6] Beginning in February 1993, he also became host of The Ongoing History of New Music. [7]

Cross left CFNY in 2001 to become program director of CJXY in Hamilton, [2] where he oversaw the station's frequency switch to become Y108. During this time he continued to host The Ongoing History of New Music. He subsequently returned to CFNY as program director in mid-January 2004, [8] remaining in that role until moving to Corus Entertainment's interactive media division, Splice Media (now called Corus Interactive and Integrated Solutions), in 2008 to launch the ExploreMusic project — although CFNY still aired The Ongoing History of New Music until 2011. He also hosted the television program ExploreMusic on aux.tv. [9]

Cross left Corus Entertainment in early July 2011, after the company restructured their online content department. [6] In an interview with the Toronto Star , Cross said that there was no ill will between himself and Corus. [6] Cross' departure effectively brought an end to The Ongoing History of New Music, because Corus Entertainment owned the show. [6]

He then began working on a different show, The Secret History of Rock, for Astral Media. [3] In 2013, he joined Rock95 Broadcasting's new CIND-FM as a music consultant and part-time on-air personality. [10] Throughout this era, Cross also maintained his own personal music blog, A Journal of Musical Things; in 2009, he attracted international attention when he became the first music critic in the world to post an advance review of U2's new single "Get On Your Boots". [11]

In 2014, he was named as the head of music curation for Songza's operations in Canada, [12] and curated a museum exhibition on the science of rock music for the Ontario Science Centre. [13] In the fall of that year, he returned to CFNY and relaunched The Ongoing History of New Music, [1] as well as a new weekday programming feature called Adventures in Vinyl. In 2015, he formed the company Major League Mixes with colleague Dave Charles; the company currently holds the contract for game music at Toronto Maple Leafs games. [14]

Personal life

Cross is married to Mary Ellen Beninger, a journalist who has been associated with the Toronto radio stations CFNY, CFTR and CHFI. [6]

David Charles Marsden is a Canadian radio broadcaster. Initially operating under the on-air name of Dave Mickie, with much fast-talking patter, he was a notable Toronto DJ of the 1960s who attracted critical attention from Marshall McLuhan. Reinventing himself, and using his real name of David Marsden, he became a much more laid-back free-form DJ, notably at CHOM in Montreal and CHUM-FM in Toronto in the 1970s. He then became the driving force behind Brampton, Ontario radio station CFNY in the 1980s, becoming an influential figure in the Canadian music industry by giving many Canadian and international alternative rock artists major Canadian radio exposure. During his stint at CFNY, his nickname was "The Mars Bar".

"The Spirit of Radio" is a song by Canadian rock band Rush, released from their 1980 album Permanent Waves. The song's name was inspired by Toronto-based radio station CFNY-FM's slogan. It was significant in the growing popularity of the band, becoming their first top 30 single in Canada and reaching number 51 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It remains one of their best-known songs and was a concert staple.

CFIQ is a commercial radio station licensed to Richmond Hill, Ontario, and serving Greater Toronto, Southern Ontario and Western New York with a talk format known as "640 Toronto". Owned by Corus Entertainment, CFIQ's studios are located at the Corus Quay Building in Toronto; despite the station's city of license being a suburban community north of the city, the transmitter resides in the Niagara Region town of Lincoln, 60 kilometres of Toronto.

The Ongoing History of New Music is the longest running music history documentary radio program in Canada. produced by Corus Entertainment and hosted by Alan Cross. It is syndicated to several radio stations, mostly but not exclusively Corus-owned, across Canada.

<i>From the Sky Down</i> 2011 documentary film about U2

From the Sky Down is a 2011 American documentary film directed by Davis Guggenheim about rock band U2 and the production of their 1991 album Achtung Baby. The film documents the album's difficult recording period, the band members' relationships, and the group's creative process. Guggenheim, who was commissioned by U2 to create the film to commemorate the record's 20th anniversary, spent several months in 2011 developing the documentary. The band were filmed during a return visit to Hansa Studios in Berlin where parts of the album were recorded, and during rehearsals in Winnipeg for the Glastonbury Festival 2011. The film contains unreleased scenes from the group's 1988 motion picture Rattle and Hum, along with archival footage and stills from the Achtung Baby recording sessions. Development of the album's emblematic song "One" is recounted through the replaying of old recording tapes.
