Alan Smith (born 1964) is a New Zealand sailor who has sailed at the Summer Olympics and in eight America's Cups. [1]

Sailing career

Born in Matamata, [2] Smith joined New Zealand Challenge for the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup and was the foredeck boss on KZ 1 during the 1988 America's Cup. [3] He was the bowman for New Zealand Challenge at the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. [4]

At the 1995 Louis Vuitton Cup, Smith sailed with oneAustralia. [5]

He sailed with Toshiba during the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race.

He joined Prada Challenge as a coach for the 1999 Louis Vuitton Cup, which they won, and the 2000 America's Cup. [6]

He represented New Zealand at the 2000 Summer Olympics, sailing with Rod Davis and Don Cowie in the Soling class. The team finished second in the fleet races but failed to advance through the match racing round robins.

He sailed with OneWorld Challenge in the 2003 Louis Vuitton Cup, before returning to Luna Rossa Challenge for the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup. [7] [8]

He joined Oracle Racing for the 2010 America's Cup, [4] before spending time with Mascalzone Latino, sailing with them in the Louis Vuitton Trophy events. [9] [10]

The winner was Emirates Team New Zealand, who challenged the defender Alinghi in June 2007 for the America's Cup.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, originally named Prada Challenge, then Luna Rossa Challenge, is an Italian sailboat racing syndicate first created to compete for the 2000 America's Cup. It won the Louis Vuitton Cup on its first attempt in 2000, but then lost the America's Cup match against the defending champion team, Team New Zealand.

Don Cowie, born 5 January 1962 in Palmerston North, New Zealand, is a former competitive sailor who won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Cowie teamed with ex-American Rod Davis in the Star class to finish second to the American crew.

Roderick Hopkins Davis is a former competitive sailor who won Olympic medals for two countries. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, representing the United States, he won the gold medal in the Soling class along with Robert Haines and Edward Trevelyan. After moving to New Zealand he was chosen to represent that country at the next three Olympic Games. Along with Don Cowie he won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in the Star class.

The 6th Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2003. The winner, Alinghi, went on to challenge for and win the 2003 America's Cup.

The 5th Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2000. The winner, Prada Challenge, went on to challenge for the 2000 America's Cup. It was the first time in the competition's history that there would not be an American challenger or defender.

The 36th America's Cup in March 2021 was the latest staging of the America's Cup yacht race. It was contested on the inner Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, New Zealand, between the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Circolo della Vela Sicilia of Italy. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's boat was Te Rehutai owned and sailed by the Emirates Team New Zealand syndicate. Circolo della Vela Sicilia's boat was Luna Rossa, owned and sailed by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli syndicate. Both boats are AC75 class high-performance foiling monohulls, a class designed specifically for this competition. The Cup was won by Team New Zealand, 7–3.

Since the 1980s, Italy has been a serious challenge contender for the America's Cup. Italian teams have won the Challenger Selection Series three times: the Louis Vuitton Cup in 1992 with Il Moro di Venezia, in 2000 with Luna Rossa and the Prada Cup in 2021, again with Luna Rossa.

The 2021 Prada Challenger's Trophy was a sailing competition held to determine the challenger in the 2021 America's Cup who would challenge Emirates Team New Zealand. The races were held from January 15 to February 21, 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand and were preceded by the 2019–20 America's Cup World Series. Veteran sailor Iain Murray served again as race director. The team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli beat Ineos Team UK 7-1 in the final moving onto the 2021 America's Cup.
