Dame Alwen Williams DBE was Chief Executive of the Barts Health NHS Trust in London, England.

Career

Alwen Williams has worked within the National Health Service in England since 1980 in managerial roles.

Since 2004 she has been the Chief Executive of several NHS Trusts, starting with Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trusts, moving on to the East London and the City Alliance of Primary Care Trusts in 2009 then the NHS East London and the City in 2011. In 2013 she took a national role as director of delivery and development for the NHS Trust Development Authority. In October 2015 she became the chief executive of the Barts Health NHS Trust in London, [1] which had been placed in 'special measures' because of deficiencies. By 2020 she had led it so that most services were rated 'good' or 'outstanding' and the financial situation had stabilised. [2]

In March 2020, in an early and rapid response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Williams led development of an additional 600 intensive care beds within four hospitals, changing to having out-patients seen remotely whenever possible and planning to use the 'Nightingale' hospital in the ExCel Conference Centre, London if further beds were necessary. As well as installing new equipment and some building work, this required re-training of some hospital staff. [3]

Honours

She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 [1] and promoted to Dame Commander of the same Order (DBE) in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to leadership in the NHS. [4] [5]

Parveen Kumar Indian academic

Dame Parveen June Kumar, is a British doctor who is currently Professor of Medicine and Education at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She worked in the NHS for over 40 years as a consultant gastroenterologist and physician at Barts and the London Hospitals and the Homerton University Hospital. She was the President of the British Medical Association in 2006, of the Royal Society of Medicine from 2010-2012, of the Medical Women's Federation from 2016-2018 and of the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund from 2013-2020. She was also Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians from 2003-2005. In addition, she was a founding non-executive director of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence, chaired the Medicines Commission UK until 2005, and also chaired the BUPA Foundation Charity for Research until 2013.

Dame Eileen Sills, DBE is the Chief Nurse, Director of Patient Experience and Infection Control and a member of the board at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. She was also, briefly, the first Freedom to Speak Up National Guardian.

Dame Ruth Carnall DBE was the last Chief Executive of NHS London before it was abolished in 2013. Ruth has worked at all levels of the NHS for over 30 years and worked as an independent consultant with various public and private sector clients. These included the Department of Health, Monitor, Health Authorities, NHS Trusts, pharmaceutical companies as well as the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, the Cabinet Office, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice. Ruth also has experience as a non-executive Partner of a public company, chair of a private company and trustee of a charity.

Pauline Mary Philip, DBE, has been the Chief Executive of Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 2010. She has previously worked for the World Health Organization. She was made an Honorary Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2017 Special Honours.
