The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is the non-profit membership association for periodontists-dental professionals specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants.

The AAP was founded in 1914 by Drs. Gillette Hayden and Grace Rogers Spalding. In 1916 Gillette Hayden served as its first female president. [1]

The AAP currently has 7,500 members including periodontists and general dentists from all 50 states and around the world. The AAP also publishes the Journal of Periodontology, a monthly scholarly journal. [2]

The mission of the AAP is to champion member success and professional partnerships for optimal patient health and quality of life. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. [3] Additionally, the AAP aims to educate the public about the link between periodontal disease and systemic diseases and advocates for periodontal science, research, and clinical advances. [4]

Gingivitis is a non-destructive disease that causes inflammation of the gums. The most common form of gingivitis, and the most common form of periodontal disease overall, is in response to bacterial biofilms that is attached to tooth surfaces, termed plaque-induced gingivitis. There is a long history of women in dentistry in the United States.

Gillette Hayden Pioneering dentist and periodontist

Dr. Gillette Hayden was a pioneering dentist and periodontist in the early 20th century. She was a founder of the American Academy of Periodontology and served as the first female President of the organization in 1916. Dr. Hayden graduated from the Ohio Medical University, which later became the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, in 1902. She was the third woman to graduate from the Ohio Medical University. Dr. Hayden was born on March 2, 1880, in Greenville, Florida, and died in 1929 in Columbus at age 49 at her home at 870 Franklin Avenue.

Gary Greenstein is an American periodontist known for his scholarship and contribution to evidence-based periodontal and dental implant literature.

The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is a non-profit, charitable foundation that promotes public awareness of periodontal disease, provides funding for research fellowships to produce new knowledge related to periodontal health, and provides educational grants to periodontists in training. The AAP Foundation was established in 1990 in Chicago, Illinois. The foundation issues $400,000 in support annually, and has awarded $3.7 million in grants, fellowships, and scholarships.

Periodontal charting

Periodontal charting refers to a chart utilized by a dental care professional to write and record gingival and overall oral conditions relating to oral and periodontal health or disease.

Grace Rogers Spalding co-founded the American Academy of Oral Prophylaxis and Periodontology in 1914. In 1923, she served as the academy's second female president.

Brian Mealey is an American periodontist.

Jørgen Slots is a Danish-born periodontist notable for his contributions to the field of periodontology. He is currently professor of periodontology and microbiology at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, and served as chairman of periodontology from 1991 to 2001.
