American Edge is a political advocacy group that lobbies for the technology industry. Its primary activities include advertising and paid op-ed campaigns.

History and mission

The group was formed in December 2019 by Facebook and other technology organizations to promote the interests of the technology interest through advertising and lobbying; according to The Washington Post its purpose is "to convince policymakers that Silicon Valley is essential to the U.S. economy and the future of free speech". [1] It funds advertising campaigns and academic research. [1] [2]

The organization was formed during a period of increased scrutiny of technology giants by U.S. lawmakers amid concerns over antitrust, privacy, security, and content moderation issues. [1] According to the Washington Post the intent was to "create the appearance of opposition by grass-roots groups to antitrust regulation." [3]

In June 2020, ten advocacy groups, including Center for Humane Technology, End Citizens United, Let America Vote, MapLight, Public Citizen, and the National Association of Social Workers called on Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, to shut the organization down. [4] The organization has been characterized as a front group [4] [5] [6] [7] and a dark money group. [8] [9]

Organizational structure and affiliations

The organization was incorporated as a non-profit in Virginia and in April 2020 registered a connected foundation. [1] The Washington Post said the organizational structure "allows it to navigate a thicket of tax laws in such a way that it can raise money, and blitz the airwaves with ads, without the obligation of disclosing all of its donors." [1]

The group is part of a "supportive coalition" that includes Bear Hill Advisors, the Center for Individual Freedom, NetChoice, 3C (trade association), the National Black Chamber of Commerce and the National Small Business Association. [2] [8]

Spending and impact

The group launched advertising campaigns addressing antitrust in the technology industry in 2020, continuing into 2021. [2] It spent $5 million on advertising in 2020 and $10 million in 2021. [2] According to CNBC, the House and Senate were at the time of the ad campaigns considering antitrust, data privacy, and other reform measures which would affect online technology platforms, almost none of which ultimately made it to a vote in either legislative body. [2] According to the Wall Street Journal, spending by groups supporting the legislation over the same period was under $200,000. [10]

Governing magazine called the ads "among the most cynical" of those created at the time by various tech-industry lobbying groups. [11]

The group also paid for the placement of op-ed columns in local newspapers throughout the country signed by representatives of local business groups; according to the Washington Post the objective was to create the impression of a grass-roots reaction to the proposed legislation. [3]

Funding

Facebook was a major donor early on, donating $4 million between late 2019 and early 2020 and another $34 million between late 2020 and early 2021. [2] According to technology industry watchdog group Tech Transparency Project, Facebook was possibly the group's "sole funder". [2]

Notable members and supporters

Initial board members included Susana Martinez, Bradley Smith, and Chris Carney. Advisory board members included Greg Walden and Heidi Heitkamp.

Tides distributes money from anonymous donors to other organizations, which are often politically progressive. An affiliated group, Tides Advocacy, is a "massive progressive incubator." Tides has received substantial funding from George Soros.

Facebook is a social media and social networking service owned by American technology conglomerate Meta Platforms. Created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with four other Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, its name derives from the face book directories often given to American university students. Membership was initially limited to Harvard students, gradually expanding to other North American universities. Since 2006, Facebook allows everyone to register from 13 years old, except in the case of a handful of nations, where the age limit is 14 years. As of December 2022, Facebook claimed 3 billion monthly active users. As of October 2023 Facebook ranked as the 3rd most visited website in the world with 22.56% of its traffic coming from the United States. It was the most downloaded mobile app of the 2010s.

Criticism of Google includes concern for tax avoidance, misuse and manipulation of search results, its use of others' intellectual property, concerns that its compilation of data may violate people's privacy and collaboration with the US military on Google Earth to spy on users, censorship of search results and content, and the energy consumption of its servers as well as concerns over traditional business issues such as monopoly, restraint of trade, antitrust, patent infringement, indexing and presenting false information and propaganda in search results, and being an "Ideological Echo Chamber".

The Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) is an international non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington, DC, United States which represents the information and communications technology industries. According to their site, CCIA "promotes open markets, open systems, open networks, and full, fair, and open competition." Established in 1972, CCIA was active in antitrust cases involving IBM, AT&T and Microsoft, and lobbied for net neutrality, copyright and patent reform and against internet censorship and policies, mergers or other situations that would reduce competition. CCIA released a study it commissioned by an MIT professor, which analyzed the cost of patent trolls to the economy., a study on the economic benefits of Fair Use and has testified before the Senate on limiting government surveillance and on internet censorship as a trade issue.

United States v. Google LLC is an ongoing federal antitrust case brought by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against Google LLC on October 20, 2020. The suit alleges that Google has violated the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 by illegally monopolizing the search engine and search advertising markets, most notably on Android devices.
