Amos Wako (born 31 July 1945) is a former Attorney General of Kenya and the first senator for Busia County from 2013 to 2017. Wako won the senatorial seat after defeating former minister of finance Chris Okemo. He won the senator seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) being led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
A lawyer by profession Wako served as the Attorney General of Kenya for 20 years (from 13 May 1991 to 26 August 2011). During his reign as the attorney general,Wako was an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya,a member of the International Commission of Jurists,Member Council of Legal Education,was a Member Council of International Bar Association. Legal Advisor to Young men Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) and Kenya Boy Scouts Association. Member Faculty Board of Law,University of Nairobi Member,O.A.U. Committee of experts on the O.A.U. charter Review Committee and African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.
In 1977 Wako was Awarded fellow International Academy of Trial Lawyers,and 1978 he was Honoured as a life member of Wiltshire Bar Association
Wako was born in Kenya. He was educated at Kakamega School, [1] and the Alliance High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics at the University of London,a Bachelor of Laws at the University College of Dar es Salaam,and a Master of Laws at the University of London. He served in several professional organizations,including holding the position of Secretary General of the African Bar Association from 1978 to 1980,and as the first secretary general of the Inter-African Union of Lawyers. He is a member of the Faculty Board of Law at the University of Nairobi. Between 1985 and 1992,he was a member of the UN Human Rights Committee. He worked for Kaplan &Stratton from March 1969 and became a Partner from April 1972 to May 1991 when he was appointed Attorney General. Wako served as LSK chairman from 1979 to 1981. He was also held numerous positions in regional and global bodies dealing with constitutional and governance affairs.
Amos Wako has been the Attorney General at a historic and transitional period in the history of Kenya. Some of the matters dealt with are:
Oversaw the transition from one party state to a multiparty democracy (December 1991) and from one Government to another through a free and fair election in which the ruling (KANU) was defeated by the opposition (NARC) (December 2002). Piloted through Parliament the necessary Constitutional amendments and legislation including providing for a multi-party democratic State and setting up of an independent Electoral Commission. Chaired National Constitutional Conferences consisting of Members of Parliament,religious leaders and representatives of the civil society. Member of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission.
Drafted the proposed new Constitution of Kenya based on the Constitution of Kenya Bill as drafted by the National Constitutional Conference and as amended by Parliament. This was Draft constitution was nicknamed "the Wako Draft",but failed miserably at the 2005 Kenyan constitutional referendum.
He kept his position as Attorney General through the transition from Daniel arap Moi to Mwai Kibaki. He is dealing with the Goldenberg scandal,a long-running corruption scandal that has lasted his entire time as Attorney General.
In October 2009 he was given a travel ban by the USA for 'deliberately blocking political reforms' following post-poll violence in 2008. Mr Amos Wako left the State Law Office on 26 August 2011 as per the new constitution which demanded him to leave office One year after its promulgation. He is Succeeded by Prof Githu Muigai. [2] [3] He joined the Orange Democratic Movement,on whose ticket he contested the Busia senate seat in the 4 March General Election. [4]
On 18 November 2019,the US State Department announced that Amos Wako,his wife and child were barred for travel to the US due to significant corruption. [5]
Emilio Mwai Kibaki was a Kenyan politician who served as the third President of Kenya from December 2002 until April 2013.
The Goldenberg scandal was a political scandal where the Kenyan government was found to have subsidised exports of gold far beyond standard arrangements during the 1990s,by paying the company Goldenberg International 35% more than their foreign currency earnings. Although it notionally appears that the scheme was intended to earn hard currency for the country,it is estimated to have cost Kenya the equivalent of more than 10% of the country's annual gross domestic product,and it is possible that no or minimal amounts of gold were actually exported. The scandal appears to have involved political corruption at the highest levels of the government of Daniel Arap Moi. Officials in the former government of Mwai Kibaki have also been implicated.
The Luhya are a bantu people and the second largest ethnic group in Kenya. The Luhya belong to the larger linguistic stock known as the Bantu. The Luhya are located in western Kenya and Uganda. They are divided into 20 culturally and linguistically united clans. Once known as the Bantu Kavirondo,multiple small tribes in North Nyanza came together under the new name Baluhya between 1950 and 1960.Bukusu is the largest luhya subtribe and account almost 50% of entire luhya population. They dominates other luhya small subtribes and they live in both Bungoma and Trans nzoia counties
Western Province was one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces outside Nairobi. It is inhabited mainly by the Luhya people. Quakerism is widely practised here. Kenya's second highest mountain,Mount Elgon is located in Bungoma District. The Kakamega Forest rainforest is part of the area. The province capital was Kakamega. After the 2013 general election,and the coming into effect of the new constitution,provinces became defunct and the country was now divided into 47 counties. Each county has its own government and therefore there is no central regional capital. Western Province became the Western region,comprising four counties:Kakamega,Bungoma,Vihiga,and Busia.
Busia is a county in the former Western Province of Kenya. It borders Kakamega County to the east,Bungoma County to the north,Lake Victoria and Siaya County to the south and Busia District,Uganda to the west. The county has about 893,861 people and spans about 1,700 square kilometers making it one of the smallest counties in Kenya. Busia is inhabited by the Luhya tribe and the Teso of Kenya,and small groups of the Luo. The Luhya communities include the Abakhayo,Marachi,Samia and Abanyala communities.
James Aggrey Bob Orengo is a Kenyan lawyer,a well known human rights activist and politician who is the current governor for Siaya County. He is also one of the few Kenyan lawyers who have attained the professional grade of Senior counsel in the legal field,a title that he earned under former president Mwai Kibaki.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is a centre-left political party in Kenya. It is the successor of a grassroots people's movement which was formed during the 2005 Kenyan constitutional referendum campaign. This movement separated in August 2007 into the Orange Democratic Movement Party of Kenya and the Wiper Democratic Movement –Kenya.
The 9th Parliament of the Republic of Kenya was opened by elected President Mwai Kibaki on February 18,2003. It was the first time that the formerly-dominant Kenya African National Union of Daniel arap Moi was in the minority. The triumphant NARC,which dominated in the general elections of 2002 was in the majority,led by Kibaki.
The 10th Parliament of Kenya saw the National Assembly opened on 15 January 2008. This following the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of Raila Odinga winning a majority in the 2007 parliamentary elections. Raila was a candidate in the presidential elections,which resulted in a controversial victory for Mwai Kibaki of the Party of National Unity. The opening of the parliament was fraught with jeers,cheers and brawls between the opposing parties;Mwai Kibaki was greeted by the ODM members with silence and boos,while Raila was greeted by PNU members with accusations of genocide.

He is an international lawyer trained in Nairobi and Washington,DC. Since 2016 he has been the leader of the Labour Party of Kenya. Ababu is also the immediate Former Chief Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya.
Charles Lilechi Lugano (1950–2009) was a Kenyan politician. He belonged to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and was elected to represent the Shinyalu Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya since the 2007 Kenyan parliamentary election.
Erupting in June 2008,the Grand Regency Scandal concerns the sale of the Grand Regency Hotel in Downtown Nairobi,Kenya,from the Central Bank of Kenya to an unspecified group of Libyan investors called "Libya Arab African Investment Company". The sale was directed by Finance Minister Amos Kimunya,leading to the passage of near-unanimous censure of Kimunya by the Kenyan Parliament on 1 July 2008. On 8 July 2008 Kimunya submitted his resignation,and called for an investigation to clear his name.

Since Kenya gained independence in 1963, the constitution has been altered many times. During the early years of Kenya's existence,the constitution was abused by the president and the ruling party to gain and consolidate power. This was achieved through the creation of a single-party state,the abolition of secret ballots,and increasing the power and prestige that comes with the presidential position.
The Constitution of Kenya is the supreme law of the Republic of Kenya. There have been three significant versions of the constitution,with the most recent redraft being enabled in 2010. The constitution was presented to the Attorney General of Kenya on 7 April 2010,officially published on 6 May 2010,and was subjected to a referendum on 4 August 2010. The new Constitution was approved by 67% of Kenyan voters. The constitution was promulgated on 27 August 2010.
Sub-counties,also known as Districts,are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level,sub-counties take a more administrative function like security,statistical purposes,provision of government services,etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties,powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023,there are 314 sub-counties,compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. The sub-counties are further divided into divisions,locations and sub-locations.
Matayos constituency is a sub-county of Busia County in the western province of Kenya. It is one of seven constituencies in Busia County. The constituency is along the Kisumu-Busia Highway and is mainly occupied by the Bakhayo,a sub-clan of the Luhya people. Being part of the lucrative investment grounds,the settlers in the region depend mainly on livestock and grains as their primary source of income. Additional contributions to the local economy include fishing and other agricultural activities. Matayos is the home of Amos Wako,the longest serving Attorney General in Kenya. The area MP is Geoffrey Makokha Odanga of the ODM party.
