Awards

Amy Deanne Hooks (born November 19, 1988) [1] is an American college softball coach and former catcher who is the current head coach at Lamar. [2] Prior to her position at Lamar, she served as assistant softball coach for six seasons at Northwestern State. [3] [4]

Playing career

High school

Born in Dallas and raised in Mesquite, Texas, Hooks played varsity softball and volleyball at North Mesquite High School. In softball, she earned several awards including being named as an All-District first team player in District 12-5A three times. She was named District 12-5A Offensive player of the year twice (2004 and 2006) and District 12-5A Defensive player of the year once (2003). In volleyball, she was named to the All-District 12-5A first team and was named to the State All-Academic team in 2006. [5]

College

Hooks played softball for the Texas Longhorns softball team from 2008-2011. At the conclusion of the 2011 season, Hooks was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and was named to the Big 12 All-Conference first-team. [6] She was also named to the Big 12 All-Conference second team in 2010 and to the Big 12 Academic All-Conference second team in 2009. She was twice named as Big 12 Player of the week (February 24, 2009 and April 12, 2011). [7] She was named to the Easton All-America second team [8] and NFCA All Central Region second team in 2011. [9] She held the team record for season home runs at 36 until the 2011 season. [10]

Professional

Hooks played in the National Pro Fastpitch league with the Carolina Diamonds in 2012 [11] and the NY/NJ Comets in 2013. [12]

Coaching career

Assistant coach

Hooks served as assistant coach for 6 years (2013–2018) for the Northwestern State Lady Demons softball team. [13] While at Northwestern State, the Lady Demons won the 2015 regular season Southland Conference championship. The Lady Demons also won the 2013 and 2014 Southland Conference softball tournament and appeared in the NCAA Division I softball tournament both years.

The Lamar Cardinals and Lady Cardinals refers to the college athletics teams of Lamar University, in Beaumont, Texas. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals teams compete in seventeen NCAA Division I sports as a member of the Southland Conference. The Cardinals rejoined the Southland after spending the 2021–22 athletic year in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

The Lamar Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The Cardinals currently play in the Southland Conference following a return from the Western Athletic Conference on July 11, 2022. They were one of four programs, all from Texas, that left the Southland Conference on July 1, 2021, to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Lamar left the Southland Conference for the second time, having initially joined at the league's formation in 1963, left in 1987, and returned in 1999. After one season in the WAC, Lamar returned to the Southland Conference. The Cardinals have played home games in the Montagne Center since 1984. The Lamar University basketball team is one of the school's most storied athletic programs. The Cardinals have competed in NCAA Tournament play eleven times and six times at the NCAA Division I level with the most recent appearance in the 2012 tournament. The 1979–80 team was one of the 1980 tournament's Sweet Sixteen teams. The Cardinals have also competed in four NIT tournaments. Heading into the 2014–2015 season Lamar had a 284–143 record in the Montagne Center. The Cardinals overall record going into the 2014–2015 season was 922–818.

Larry Dan Tidwell, is the head coach for the Schulenburg High School women’s basketball team. Before moving to Kansas, he served as women's basketball head coach from 2013–2018 at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, having been retained when his former institution, the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), merged with the University of Texas at Brownsville. Prior to this position, he was head coach of the Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team for six seasons from 2007–2013, as well as the Lamar athletics director from June 2010 to May 2011.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I women's basketball competition. The team plays in the 10,080 seat Montagne Center. The Lady Cardinals currently compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Southland Conference.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I college softball. The team competes in the Southland Conference. The Lady Cardinals are currently led by head coach Amy Hooks. The team played its home games at the off–campus Ford Park for the first two seasons following the program restart in 2013. The Lady Cardinals began playing home games at the Lamar Softball Complex located on the university's campus starting with the 2015 season.

Holly Jean Bruder is an American college softball coach. She most recently served as head coach at Lamar from 2013 to 2018. From 2008 to 2011, she served as head coach at NCAA Division I Morehead State. Prior to the seasons at Morehead State, she served as head coach at NCAA Division III Denison University for six years (2002–2007). Before her head coaching assignments, Bruder was assistant coach at Bluffton College in 2001 after beginning her college coaching career as an assistant coach at Albion College (1999–2000).

The 2015 Lamar Cardinals football team represented Lamar University in the 2015 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Cardinals were led by sixth-year head coach Ray Woodard and played their home games at Provost Umphrey Stadium. They are a member of the Southland Conference.

The 2016–17 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by fourth year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center and are members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season with a 21–6, 15–3 Southland play. They lost in the semifinals of the Southland women's tournament to Stephen F. Austin. They were invited to the WBI where they lost to Rice in the first round.

The Lamar Soccer Complex, built in 2009 on the campus of Lamar University, is a soccer facility located in Beaumont, Texas. It is the home stadium for the Division I (NCAA) Lamar Lady Cardinals soccer team. The stadium has a permanent seating capacity of 500. Stadium features include covered benches for both the home and visiting teams, lighting, and a programmable fertilization and irrigation system. Construction of the stadium began on June 15, 2009. Construction cost of the soccer field and adjacent Lamar Soccer and Softball Complex building was $3,724,920. The stadium and supporting Lamar Soccer and Softball Complex building were part of a $29 million athletic construction project.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals soccer team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I college soccer. The team, currently led by head coach Nathan Kogut, competes in the Southland Conference. The team's initial season was 2007. The Lady Cardinals' home stadium is the Lamar Soccer Complex located on the university's campus. The team began playing home games there starting with the 2009 season. The Lady Cardinals home stadium for the first two seasons was Cardinal Stadium now named Provost Umphrey Stadium.

The Cardinals were led by fifth-year head coach Tic Price and played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Southland Conference.

The 2019–20 Lamar Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cardinals were led by sixth-year head coach Tic Price and played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 17–15, 10–10 in Southland play to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. They defeated McNeese State in the first round of the Southland tournament and were set to face Nicholls in the second round before the tournament was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represented Lamar University in the 2020 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Cardinals played their home games at Lamar Softball Complex and are members of the Southland Conference. The team was coached by Amy Hooks in her second season at Lamar. On March 12, the Southland Conference announced a suspension of Spring sports through March 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference announced that all remaining Spring 2020 sports contests were cancelled on March 14. The Lady Cardinals played 20 games in the shortened season with an overall record of 8–12, and a 0–3 record in conference play.

The 2021 Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represented Lamar University during the 2021 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Cardinals played their home games at Lamar Softball Complex and were led by third-year head coach Amy Hooks. They were members of the Southland Conference. Home game attendance for the 2021 season was limited to 119 per game due to COVID19 precautions.

The 2021–22 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2021–22 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by third-year head coach Aqua Franklin, played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Western Athletic Conference.

The 2023 Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represented Lamar University during the 2023 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Cardinals played their home games at Lamar Softball Complex and were led by fifth-year head coach Amy Hooks. The 2023 season marked Lamar's return to the Southland Conference following one season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.

The 2023–24 Lamar Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cardinals were led by third-year head coach Alvin Brooks and played their home games at the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas. They finished the 2023–24 season 19–14 overall and 12–6 in Southland Conference play for a fourth place conference finish. As the 4th seeded team, the Cardinals were 1–1 in the SLC tournament defeating 8th seeded New Orleans 71–57 and losing to 1st seeded McNeese 57–76 in the semi–final round.

The 2024 Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represented Lamar University during the 2024 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Cardinals played their home games at Lamar Softball Complex as a member of the Southland Conference and were led by head coach Amy Hooks in her sixth-year at Lamar. The team compiled a 26–25 overall record and a 12–12 record in conference play for a fifth place finish. As the fifth seeded team in the SLC tournament, the Lady Cardinals were defeated in extra innings by fourth seeded Incarnate Word 4–58. Their season ended with another extra inning defeat versus third seeded Nicholls 4–58.

The 2022 Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represented Lamar University during the 2022 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Cardinals played their home games at Lamar Softball Complex and were led by fourth-year head coach Amy Hooks. The 2022 season marked Lamar's move from the Southland Conference to the Western Athletic Conference. Lamar returned to the Southland conference after one season in the WAC.

The 2019 Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represented Lamar University in the 2019 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Cardinals played their home games at Lamar Softball Complex and are members of the Southland Conference. The team was coached by Amy Hooks in her first season at Lamar. The Lady Cardinals finished the season 7th in the Southland with a record of 23–34, 14–13 in conference play. They lost to Northwestern State in the single elimination opening round of the 2019 Southland Conference softball tournament.
