[3] Bishop Angaelos OBE is the Coptic Orthodox Bishop of London and Papal Legate to the UK.
Angaelos was born in Cairo, Egypt and emigrated with his family to Australia, where he spent his childhood years. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in political science, philosophy and sociology, and went on to postgraduate studies in law whilst working in the same field. [2]
In 1990, Angaelos returned to Egypt to join the Monastery of Saint Bishoy in Wadi-El-Natroun, where he was subsequently[ when? ] consecrated a monk by Pope Shenouda III. He served as Papal secretary until 1995, and was then delegated by the Pope to serve as a parish priest in the United Kingdom. [2] He was consecrated in 1999 as a General Bishop (a rank between auxiliary bishop and chorbishop) in the United Kingdom of the Coptic Orthodox Church. [4] He was then enthroned as the first Coptic Orthodox Bishop of London [5] (ecclesial title given by Pope Tawadros II) on 18 November 2017
In the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours, Angaelos was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to international religious freedom. [6] [7]
In 2017, the Bishop was made a Knight Commander of the Order of Michael Archangel, by the Head of the Royal House of Ghassan. [5]

The Coptic Orthodox Church, also known as the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, is an Oriental Orthodox Christian church based in Egypt. The head of the church and the See of Alexandria is the pope of Alexandria on the Holy Apostolic See of Saint Mark, who also carries the title of Father of fathers, Shepherd of shepherds, Ecumenical Judge and the 13th among the Apostles. The See of Alexandria is titular. The Coptic pope presides from Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in the Abbassia District in Cairo. Pope Shenouda III was the 117th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark. His papacy lasted 40 years, 4 months, and 4 days, from 14 November 1971 until his death.
