Anderson Cup (field hockey)

The Anderson Cup is a hockey tournament for clubs that are members of the Premier League of the Ulster Senior League. The current holder is Kilkeel.

Trophy

The trophy was donated to the Ulster Hockey Union of the Irish Hockey Association by Mr T N Anderson as a memorial for his brother Captain J G Anderson MC. Captain Anderson was a prominent member of the Banbridge Hockey Club and Irish International player who was killed whilst serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War I. One of the conditions requested by the donor was that the Final should be played at the ground of Banbridge Hockey Club. The Ulster Hockey Union agreed to this condition except for when Banbridge was one of the Finalists.

Current format

From 2015-16, the competition reverted from nine-a-side back to eleven-a-side. Played in the second half of the season, all Ulster Premier League teams take part. [1] From 2018-19 Ulster members of the Irish Hockey League also take part.

Historical formats

Until the reorganisation of Senior hockey after the 2000-01 season, all the senior league clubs participated in the Anderson Cup. The trophy was competed for through an open draw.

Between 2001-02 and 2008-09 the eight teams competing in the Premier League of the Ulster Senior League were drawn into two groups of four. The winners and runners-up of these two groups then proceeded to the semi-finals.

The competition became a nine-a-side tournament until reverting to eleven-a-side in 2015-16.

The gate receipts at the Final of the competition were donated to hospital charities, and the competition was often referred to as the Anderson Charity Cup. At the 1926 Final record gate receipts of £50 was reported. [2]

Following the reorganisation of the league structure following the 2008-09 season until 2014-15, the ten clubs of the Premier League of the Ulster Senior League and the ten Section One teams competed for the trophy. The competition reverted to an open draw format.

The club's senior men's team plays in the Men's Irish Hockey League, the Men's Irish Senior Cup, the Kirk Cup and the Anderson Cup. They have previously played in the Ulster Senior League. The Ulster Senior League, currently known as the Ulster Rugby Premiership, is a rugby union competition for senior clubs in the Irish province of Ulster. It was formed by the then Northern Branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union in October 1890. It has traditionally being ranked second in importance to the Ulster Senior Cup. It has declined in importance due to the formation of the All-Ireland League and growth in importance of the Heineken Cup.

The Burney Cup is an annual competition involving the strongest schools affiliated to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association. The competition is held in the spring term of each school year and progress through to the final is via an open draw.

The Ulster Senior Schoolgirls' Cup is an annual competition competed for by schools affiliated to the Ulster Hockey Association, a branch of the Irish Hockey Association. The competition has been in existence since 1907 and is currently sponsored by the Belfast Telegraph.

The Kirk Cup is the oldest hockey tournament in Ulster and the oldest provincial hockey trophy in Ireland. It has become a tradition since the 1966-67 season for the final to be played on Boxing Day, a date previously reserved for the Anderson Cup Final. The final attracts the largest crowd of the Ulster hockey season. The cup is named after its donor, Mr. John Kirk, J.P, who was a member of the Antrim club. The Richardson Cup is a hockey competition for the boy's under-15 teams from schools affiliated to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association. The trophy is currently held by Friends School Lisburn after a comprehensive 5-0 win over Regent in 2017. This particular Friends team has now won 3 cups in a row: the Ferris Cup, the Bannister Bowl and the Richardson Cup.

Portrush Hockey Club is a hockey club affiliated to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association based in Portrush, County Antrim. The club currently plays in the Intermediate League of Ulster Hockey.

Cookstown Hockey Club is a hockey club based in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is affiliated to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association and was founded in 1951. Mossley Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in the village of Mossley in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. It was formed in 1929 following a meeting of employees of Henry Campbell's Mill in the village. The club currently fields five men's teams, with the first team playing in the Premier League of the Ulster Senior League. In 1994 the Club won a coaching award in recognition of its work with young players.

Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in the Sandymount/Ballsbridge area of Dublin 4, Ireland. The club was founded in 1922 and named after the Pembroke Township. The club's senior men's team plays in the Men's Irish Hockey League and the Men's Irish Senior Cup. The club's senior women's team plays in the Women's Irish Hockey League and the Women's Irish Senior Cup. Reserve teams play in the Irish Junior Cup and the Women's Irish Junior Cup. Pembroke has also represented Ireland in European competitions. They won the 2009 EuroHockey Club Trophy.
