Sir James Whyte Black was a Scottish physician and pharmacologist. Together with Gertrude B. Elion and George H. Hitchings,he shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988 for pioneering strategies for rational drug-design,which,in his case,lead to the development of propranolol and cimetidine. Black established a Veterinary Physiology department at the University of Glasgow,where he became interested in the effects of adrenaline on the human heart. He went to work for ICI Pharmaceuticals in 1958 and,while there,developed propranolol,a beta blocker used for the treatment of heart disease. Black was also responsible for the development of cimetidine,an H2 receptor antagonist,a drug used to treat stomach ulcers.
Edinburgh Napier University is a public university in Edinburgh,Scotland. Napier Technical College,the predecessor of the university,was founded in 1964,taking its name from 16th-century Scottish mathematician and philosopher John Napier. The technical college was inaugurated as a university in 1992 by Lord Douglas-Hamilton,becoming Napier University. In 2009,the university was renamed Edinburgh Napier University.

The ancient university governance structure in Scotland is the organisational system imposed by a series of Acts of Parliament called the Universities (Scotland) Acts 1858 to 1966. The Acts applied to what were termed the 'older universities':the University of St Andrews,the University of Glasgow,the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh. Together these four universities are commonly referred to as the ancient universities of Scotland. Whilst the Acts do not directly apply to the University of Dundee,the same governance structure was ordained for use by that institution in its royal charter.

Prof Henry Dryerre FRSE MRCS LRCP was a Scottish veterinarian and animal physiologist. He was Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the Dick Veterinary College in Edinburgh. The Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland administer a bursary known as the Henry Dryerre Scholarship which is named in his honour. Due to his lineage he is sometimes referred to as Henry Dryerre IV.
