The club's handball teams compete at the local level, at the Luanda Provincial Handball Championship and at the Men's and Women's leagues as well as at continental level, at the annual Champions League, Cup Winner's Cup and Super Cup competitions. Undoubtedly, the women's handball team of Petro Atlético has been the most successful team in Africa for many years.

The Angolan Handball Federation is the governing body of official handball competitions in Angola. FAAND was founded on May 20, 1974, still in the heat of the anti-colonial struggle, when a group of nationalists decided to establish the federation. On May 20, every year, the National Handball Day is celebrated, to mark the day that for the first time, a handball tournament was organized in Angola. However, only in 1976 it officially began to operate. Mr. Francisco António de Almeida was appointed as chairman. FAB oversees the activities of the 18 provincial handball associations in the country.

The Angolan Basketball Cup is an annual basketball competition in which all Angolan basketball clubs are eligible to contest. The tournament, played in a knock-out system, is Angola's second most important basketball competition following the national league.

The roller hockey team of Petro Atlético has been the most titled team in Angola for many years. In recent years, its leadership has been successfully challenged by Juventude de viana, and by Académica de Luanda more recently.

The Angolan Handball SuperCup aka Supertaça Francisco de Almeida is an annual handball competition between the winners of the previous year's league champion and cup. In case the same team happens to win both the league and the cup, the match will be played between the league winner and the cup runner-up.

The Angolan Handball Cup is an annual, nationwide handball competition contested by all eligible handball clubs in the country. The cup, organized by the Angolan Handball Federation is the second most important official handball competition in Angola, following the national league.

The 2016 Angola Men's Handball League was the 37th edition, organized by the Federação Angolana de Andebol. The tournament was held from June 14–25, 2016 in Luanda, contested by 7 teams and won by Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto.

The 2014 Taça de Angola was the 33rd edition of the Taça de Angola, the second most important and the top knock-out football club competition in Angola, following the Girabola. Benfica de Luanda beat defending champions Petro de Luanda 1–0 in the final to secure its first title.

The 2012 Angola Cup was the 31st edition of what is considered the second most important football club competition in Angola, following the Girabola. Petro de Luanda beat Rec da Caála 1–0 in the final to secure its 9th title.

The 2017 Angola Women's Handball League was the 38th edition, organized by the Federação Angolana de Andebol. The tournament was held from July 10–22, 2017 in Luanda, contested by 7 teams and won by Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto.
