Anjali Bhimani (born August 30, 1974 in Cleveland, Ohio [1] [2] ) is an American actress. She is best known for voicing Symmetra in the video game Overwatch and Rampart in the video game Apex Legends .

Early life

Bhimani was born in Cleveland, Ohio, [3] [4] the daughter of doctors Ela and Bharat Bhimani. [3] She is of Indian descent and grew up in Orange County, California. [3] She attended Northwestern University. [4]

Bhimani's long time collaboration with Mary Zimmerman began in 1997 when she appeared as an Indian princess in Mirror of the Invisible World, adapted from the 12th century Persian epic Haft Peykar . [5] [6] She played Greek mythological character Myrrha in Zimmerman-directed Metamorphoses 's world premiere produced by Lookingglass Theatre Company in 1998 and its Off-Broadway opening at the Second Stage Theatre in 2001. [7] Drama critic Albert Williams, in his review for the Chicago Reader , called Bhimani a "stunning dancer". [8] She made her Broadway debut when Metamorphoses opened at Circle in the Square Theatre (2002). [9] [10]

In 2004, Bhimani became an understudy for Ayesha Dharker and Madhur Jaffrey's characters in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Bombay Dreams . During the play's The Broadway Theatre production Dharker left the play and Bhimani took over her role. [11] [12] She appeared as The Sparrow in Czech opera Brundibár (2006). [13] Quake, a play Bhimani co-produced and co-directed opened at the Open Fist Theatre Company's First Look Festival of New Plays in 2011. [14] For The Jungle Book she re-teamed with Zimmerman and played the role of mother wolf in its 2013 Goodman Theatre production. [5]

Bhimani has appeared in TV series including All My Children , Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , The Sopranos , Journeyman , Shark , Flight of the Conchords , and Modern Family . She voiced the character Symmetra in the first-person shooter video game Overwatch , and shared the 2016 Behind the Voice Actors Award for Best Vocal Ensemble in a Video Game with her co-voice actors for the game. In 2021, she guest starred on Exandria Unlimited , a spinoff of the web series Critical Role . In 2023, she played Queen Amangeaux Epicée du Peche in Dimension 20: The Ravening War. [15]

<i>Critical Role</i> American Dungeons & Dragons web series

Critical Role is an American web series in which a group of professional voice actors plays Dungeons & Dragons. The show started streaming partway through the cast's first campaign in March 2015. Campaign one ended in October 2017 after 115 episodes, and campaign two started in January 2018 and ended in June 2021 after 141 episodes. A number of one-shots were aired in the hiatus between the two campaigns. After campaign two was completed, the spin-off limited series Exandria Unlimited aired from June 2021 to August 2021. The third campaign premiered on October 21, 2021.

The Overwatch franchise, a series of first-person shooter games developed by Blizzard Entertainment consists of 39 playable characters across both games. The original 2016 game, Overwatch, featured 32 playable characters known as heroes and a number of supporting characters as part of the game's narrative, which is told through animated media and digital comics outside of the game. Its sequel, Overwatch 2, was released in October 2022 and replaced Overwatch. The sequel builds upon the same hero roster and added more characters, currently consisting of 39 heroes. However, as Overwatch 2 had been developed to be a faster game with five-versus-five teams rather than six-versus-six, several of the characters had tweaks or major rebuilds within Overwatch 2, as well as different character designs.

Conceived by Jeff Kaplan and designed by Arnold Tsang, the character was conceived due to a desire to include a classic fantasy wizard into the game's science fiction setting, expressed through her ability to create constructs from thin air using hard-light technology.
