The issue spurred a Change.org petition that garnered over 100,000 signatures. The story was also picked up by national news media outlets such as Buzzfeed. However, the archdiocese of Omaha upheld the teacher's termination. In early 2019, the staff came under fire for their perceived mistreatment of a senior who had recently come out as bisexual.
