Each week, Art has an interview with a guest performer, while also playing a historic recording from the Jazztrax Archive. The show is syndicated to 44 different stations around the country, and webcast around the world. It is typically five hours long. Jazztrax has also expanded to include the world-famous Catalina Island Jazztrax Festival, the Jazztrax Baseball Train, the Big Bear Lake Jazztrax Summer Festival, and other events, most of which are also simulcast over the web.

The award categories are similar in nature to the Grammys, American Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards. Awards are given for Song of the Year, CD of the Year, Male and Female Artist of the Year. Also, an award is presented to the player of the year on saxophone, piano, drums, bass, or guitar.

Smooth jazz was a popular radio format that included songs by artists such as George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kenny G, Luther Vandross, Sade, Robin Thicke, Anita Baker, Basia, Dave Koz and Chuck Mangione. It began in the 1980s as "adult alternative" or NAC, a well-defined radio format, with jazz, new-age music and adult contemporary music. In the 1990s, the format became much more jazz-oriented, with very little new-age, and emphasizing young artists.
