Assemblage Entertainment is an Indian animation studio based out of Mumbai, founded in December 2013, by industry veteran AK Madhavan (fondly known as Madmax). [1] The studio distributes animation productions of major Hollywood studios and other independent production companies from around the world.

Background

In September 2015, Assemblage Entertainment completed work on its first feature animation film, Blinky Bill the Movie, a full-length feature film co-produced by Flying Bark Productions, Telegael. [2]

Starting with a team of fewer than 20 artists in the suburbs of Mumbai, the company has grown rapidly into a studio of over 450 people, working on full-length features for global audiences. It has established itself as a leading independent player in animation, with numerous projects from global producers. The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai mentioned Assemblage Entertainment as forebear of their Google Cloud Platform [3] at the GCP Next Global User Conference on 23 March 2016. [4]

The company also experiments with different types of film making. Recently, it ventured into short-film making with Living Idle. [5]

Visual effects

In 2021, the company set up their VFX unit and was one of the leading VFX studios to work on Rocketry: The Nambi Effect directed by R. Madhavan. [6] The movie was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was appreciated by critics and audience alike. [7] Assemblage also received a Filmfare Awards nomination for Best VFX in 2023. [8]

The Indian Animation Industry encompasses traditional 2D animation, 3D animation and visual effects for feature films. In 1956, Disney Studios animator Clair Weeks, who had worked on Bambi, was invited to Films Division of India in Mumbai to establish and train the country's first animation studio as part of the American technical co-operation mission. He trained a core group of Indian animators, whose first production was a film called The Banyan Deer (1957). Veteran animator Ram Mohan started his career at Films Division's Cartoon Unit.

<i>Rocketry: The Nambi Effect</i> 2022 film directed by R. Madhavan

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is a 2022 Indian biographical drama film written, produced and directed by R. Madhavan in his directorial debut. Simran played the main female lead. The film is based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, played by Madhavan, a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation who was accused in the ISRO espionage case and later exonerated. The story spans across Narayanan's days as a graduate student at Princeton University, before exploring his work as a scientist and the false espionage charges placed upon him.

Prakash Nambiar is a film director, producer, film writer, animator, entrepreneur and an author based in Mumbai. He's best known for the creation of two animated characters "Hum & Tum" for Yash Raj Films under his company Kathaa Animations. The characters were used in the critically acclaimed award-winning film of the same name Hum Tum (2004). Both characters are one of the most successful animated characters to be used in mainstream Bollywood film.

He's particularly notable for his role producing the later directed and co-produced by R.
