Association for College Management

The Association for College Management (ACM) was a trade union in the United Kingdom.

The union was founded in 1965 as the Association of Vice-Principals of Colleges, representing middle managers in colleges of further and higher education. [1] In 1987, it was renamed the Association of College Management, its first general secretary was Wilson Longden. He was succeeded by John Mowbray. In 2001 he was succeeded by Peter Pendle, by which time it had adopted its final name. By 2002, it had 3,250 members and affiliated to the Trades Union Congress and the General Federation of Trade Unions. [2] It had broadened its remit to represent all management grades in colleges, although it faced competition from the Secondary Heads Association. [3]

In 2008, the union set up the Association of Managers in Education as a joint venture with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), and the ACM became part of the ATL in January 2011. [4]

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) was a trade union, teachers' union and professional association, affiliated to the Trades Union Congress, in the United Kingdom representing educators from nursery and primary education to further education. In March 2017, ATL members endorsed a proposed merger with the National Union of Teachers to form a new union known as the National Education Union, which came into existence on 1 September 2017. At that time, approximately 120,000 individuals belonged to the union, making it the third largest teaching and education union in the UK. ATL had members throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and British Service schools overseas.

The Northern Carpet Trades Union (NCTU) was a trade union in the United Kingdom. It was first formed in 1892 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, later expanding to cover all of Northern England. The NCTU was formed later than the Power Loom Carpet Weavers' and Textile Workers' Association, based in Kidderminster, and was considerably smaller. Approximately a fifth of eligible workers were members of the NCTU in 1939, compared to 50 percent for the Kidderminster union. Attempts to amalgamate all unions in the carpet trade failed, but in 1917 the National Affiliation of Carpet Trade Unions was established with equal representation from the NCTU, Scottish Carpet Workers' Union, National Union of Dyers, Bleachers and Textile Workers and Power Loom Carpet Weavers' and Textile Workers' Union.

National Union of Scottish Mineworkers

The National Union of Scottish Mineworkers (NUSW) is a trade union in Scotland, founded in 1894 as the Scottish Miners Federation. It joined the Miners' Federation of Great Britain, and in 1914 changed its name to National Union of Scottish Mineworkers. It survives as the National Union of Mineworkers.
