Attorney General of Bermuda

Established in 1698, the Attorney-General's Chambers of Bermuda is the main legal advisor to the federal government and makes laws accessible to the public. From 1698-1999, the Attorney-General was also the main prosecutor in all criminal matters that pertained to the Bermuda courts. Attorneys-General are appointed by the Governor per the Constitution. All were public officers until 1999 when Lois Browne-Evans was appointed as the island's first political Attorney-General through election. Due to Bermuda's decision to have a political Attorney-General, the Director of Public Prosecutions now handles all criminal matters. Even though there are now two distinct offices, the Attorney-General is also considered Bermuda's Minister of Legal Affairs. [1]

Lois Browne-Evans

Dame Lois Marie Browne-Evans DBE JP was a lawyer and political figure in Bermuda. She led the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) in opposition before being appointed Bermuda's first female Attorney-General. She first gained recognition in 1953 as Bermuda's first female barrister. Browne-Evans died of a suspected stroke on 29 May 2007, three days before her 80th birthday.

Mia Mottley Prime Minister of Barbados since 2018

Mia Amor Mottley, is a Barbadian politician and attorney who has served as Prime Minister of Barbados since 2018 and as leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008. Mottley is the eighth person to hold the office of Prime Minister in Barbados and the first woman to hold either position. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system, following constitutional changes she introduced which abolished the country's constitutional monarchy.

LGBT rights in Bermuda

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT persons. Homosexuality is legal in Bermuda, but the territory has long held a reputation for being homophobic and intolerant. Since 2013, the Human Rights Act has prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

The Attorney-General of Barbados is the primary legal advisor to the Government of Barbados.

Trevor Gerard Moniz is a Portuguese-Bermudian politician who served as Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs in the Government of Bermuda from 2014 to 2017.

Same-sex marriage in Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, is not legal. It first became legal on 5 May 2017, when the Supreme Court of Bermuda declared that same-sex couples had a legal right to marry in the territory after a couple filed suit against the Bermudian Government. However, a bill to ban same-sex marriage and establish domestic partnerships was passed by the Parliament in December 2017 and went into effect on 1 June 2018 though same-sex marriages performed before that day remained legally recognised.

Domestic Partnership Act 2018

The Domestic Partnership Act 2018 is an act of the Parliament of Bermuda. It provided for the creation of domestic partnerships for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples and prohibited same-sex marriage, making the Parliament of Bermuda the first legislature to abolish same-sex marriage after it was initially legalised.

The Office of the Attorney-General & Ministry of Legal Affairs provides legal advice to the government of the Bahamas in national and international matters.

The Ministry of Justice of Ethiopia has the authority of federal prosecution and had possessed executive and judicial powers. The ministry was a part of the federal branch of the government, and prosecuted cases that fell within the federal jurisdiction. In 1995, the responsibility for the federal police force and prisons was transferred to the Ministry of Justice after the Ministry of Internal Affairs was abolished. In 2017, it was announced that the Ministry of Justice's affairs would be transitioned into the Federal Attorney General's Office.

Although there were Attorneys General that served the Colony of Sierra Leone, the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice that still stands today was first established in 1961. It would not combine with the Ministry of Justice until 1978 when the country's constitution was amended. The office is responsible for prosecuting all offenses in the name of the Republic of Sierra Leone. The Solicitor General and the Director of Public Prosecutions are two sub-units of the Office of Attorney General and Ministry of Justice.

Attorney General of Guyana

The Ministry of Legal Affairs and Attorney General's Chambers ensures that proper legal services are provided to the Government of Guyana, as well as statutory services to the public. The Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs is the head of the chambers. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Legal affairs handles administrative responsibilities for the departments within the Ministry and is the Accounting Officer. The Advice and Litigation Division and the Drafting Division of the Attorney General's Chambers are headed by the Attorney General and Chief Parliamentary Counsel respectively.

The Ministry of Justice, Immigration and National Security of Dominica provides legal advice and representation to the federal government and its departments, as well as administers justice, protects intellectual property rights, and ensures that financial crimes are properly analyzed and investigated. The Department of Justice of Micronesia provides legal advice to the President, Executive Branch, and national government. It represents the national government in court, administrative hearings, and legal negotiations.

The Attorney General's Office, Ministry of Justice, Human Rights and Institutional Reforms of Mauritius provides legal and legislative drafting services to the government of Mauritius. The Attorney General's Office interacts with the Legislature, Judiciary (Courts) and the Executive (Government/Ministries) branches, as well as provides assistance to the courts based on the powers vested in the office.

The Ministry of Justice of Papua New Guinea acts the principal advisor to the government and is responsible for all civil litigation matters by and against the state. The Minister of Justice gives opinions on any questions relating to the interpretation or application of the laws of Papua New Guinea including the Constitution, Organic Laws, Acts of Parliament and all other subordinate legislation. 2020 Bermudian general election

The 2020 Bermudian general election was held on 1 October 2020 to elect all 36 members to the House of Assembly of Bermuda. On 21 August 2020 Premier Edward David Burt announced that Governor of Bermuda John Rankin has accepted his advice to call a snap election. The election resulted in the largest victory for one party since party politics began in Bermuda in 1968, as the Progressive Labour Party won 62% of the vote and 30 of 36 seats.
