Awakebutstillinbed, stylized as awakebutstillinbed, and abbreviated as absib, is the solo project of American musician Shannon Taylor.

History

Taylor (born November 13, 1991) [1] grew up in Mesquite, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Taylor later moved from Mesquite to York, Pennsylvania with her family at the age of fifteen. Later, Taylor moved to San Jose, California, where she currently resides. [2] In January 2018, Taylor released her first album as awakebutstillinbed titled What People Call Low Self-Esteem Is Really Just Seeing Yourself the Way That Other People See You. [3] The album was re-released on Tiny Engines upon Taylor's signing with the label in February. [4] [5] The album received a 7.7 out of 10 rating from Pitchfork. [6] The album was featured at number 98 on Brooklyn Vegan's list titled "100 Best Punk & Emo Albums of the 2010s". [7]

Pop-punk is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of punk rock with power pop or pop. It is defined by its fast-paced, energetic tempos, and emphasis on classic pop songcraft, as well as adolescent and anti-suburbia themes. San Diego-based bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow pioneered the genre in the early 1990s, and it was developed in the late 1990s mainly by bands from the East Coast of the United States such as Pg. 99, Orchid, Saetia, and I Hate Myself. Screamo is strongly influenced by hardcore punk and characterized by the use of screamed vocals. Lyrical themes usually include emotional pain, death, romance, and human rights. The term "screamo" has frequently been mistaken as referring to any music with screaming.

The emo revival was an underground emo movement which began in the late 2000s and had declined by the mid–to late 2010s. The movement began towards the end of the 2000s third wave of emo, with bands like Tigers Jaw, Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing who distanced themselves from the era's pop sensibilities and instead revived the sound of 1990s second wave emo. This coincided with the rise of bands, like Touché Amoré, La Dispute and Defeater, who too embraced the influence of 1990s emo, as well as screamo and post-hardcore.

Prominent on social media, Hunter has been outspoken about the history and current state of ska music, earning the fan nickname "The CEO of Ska". BrooklynVegan has written, "You can't talk about the renewed interest in ska without talking Jeremy Hunter", while music critic Anthony Fantano has described them as "a one-person ska wrecking crew".
