The club began play in 2017 as the league's 22nd club, and replaced the North American Soccer League (NASL) franchise of the same name.

The club played its home matches at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The club failed to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs for a fifth consecutive year. On October 6, the club fired Technical Director Mark Watson and Head Coach Adrian Heath.
The 2024 MLS SuperDraft was the 25th edition of the MLS SuperDraft, a sports draft to select amateur, usually collegiate, soccer players that are not affiliate with an MLS club, or college soccer players that had their Homegrown player rights relinquished by their parent MLS club. The draft will be held on December 19, 2023, marking the second year in a row that the draft will be held in December. Despite the draft being held in 2023, the draft will retain 2024 branding.
The 2024 season is the second season for St. Louis City SC. It is the club's second season in existence, their first in the top-tier of American soccer, and their second season in Major League Soccer.
