The BVIFA National Football League is the highest competitive football league in the British Virgin Islands. The league was founded in 2009 after the merger between the Tortola League and the Virgin Gorda League.

Contents

In 2012 the league decided to split the teams into two groups, based on the position they finished in the standings at the end of the 2011–12 season. [1]

The majority of matches in the league are held at the national stadium, the 1,500-capacity A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground, based in Road Town, Tortola. Matches are also held on the island of Virgin Gorda.

Domestic Cup Competitions

There are two domestic cup competitions played prior to the start of the league season, which were both founded in 2010. They are the Terry Evans Knockout Cup, which is named after the former BVIFA President and one of the forefathers of football in the British Virgin Islands. [3]

And the Wendol Williams Cup (also known as the Caribbean Cellars Wendol Williams Cup), which is played in memory of former BVIFA executive member Wendol Williams, who died aged 39 on 6 June 2010 on his way to the FIFA congress in South Africa ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. [4]

The colony of the British Virgin Islands has issued its own stamps since 1866. The first Post Office was opened in Tortola in 1787. At the time postage stamps were not yet invented, and it was not until 1858 that a small supply of adhesive stamps issued by Great Britain depicting Queen Victoria were utilized by the local Post Office. Association football – commonly known as football – is a popular sport in the British Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands Football Association – the territory's football governing body – organizes the men's and women's national teams and administers the territory's professional league the BVIFA National Football League. As members of Caribbean Football Union teams are eligible for the Caribbean Club Championship and the territory's membership in CONCACAF allows teams to participate in that organizations club and national team competitions. The British Virgin Island are also a member of FIFA and is therefore eligible to play in the World Cup. The national teams also compete in the Virgin Islands Championship against the US Virgin Islands.

Desire Montgomery Butler is a former association football and cricket player from British Virgin Islands (BVI). In football, he played as a goalkeeper for Islanders FC and for the BVI national team. In cricket he played as a left-handed batsman and wicket-keeper for the BVI national team.
