Backlight (Dutch : Tegenlicht) is a documentary television program by Dutch public broadcasting organisation VPRO. [1] [2] The first episode of Backlight was broadcast on 8 September 2002. [3]
The program "aims to grasp the quintessence of prominent trends and developments" in the practice of critical journalism, and tries to improve understanding of the intricate inner workings of our modern society. [4]
The program won the Zilveren Nipkowschijf in 2005. [5] The episode "Lockerbie Revisited" won the Prix Europa in the category TV Current Affairs in 2009. [6] The episode "Money & Speed", made for iPad, won the Golden Eye at the Dutch Design Awards in 2011. [7] [8]
VPRO released four documentaries in 2009 and 2010 under a Creative Commons license using the content distribution feature of the Mininova BitTorrent tracker. [9] [10] [11]

The VPRO is a Dutch public broadcaster that is part of the Dutch public broadcasting system. It was founded in 1926 as a liberal Protestant radio station. In the 1950s and 1960s, it gradually became social liberal rather than Protestant, and the original meaning of the acronym was eventually dropped.

The Stripschapprijs is a Dutch prize awarded to comic creators for their entire body of work. It is awarded annually by the Stripschap, the Dutch Society of comics fans, since 1974. The prize is non-pecuniary, but is considered the most important award for comics in the country.
Willem Theodoor "Wim T." Schippers is a Dutch artist, comedian, television director, and voice actor. During the 1960s, he worked mostly as a visual artist, associated with the international Fluxus-movement. As a television writer, director, and actor he is responsible for some of the most notable and controversial shows on Dutch televisions from the 1960s to the 1990s, creating a number of lasting characters and enriching the language with terms and expressions first coined in his shows. The Gouden Ganzenveer is a Dutch cultural award initiated in 1955, given annually to a person or organization of great significance to the written and printed word. Recipients are selected by an academy of people from the cultural, political, scientific, and corporate world. Members meet once a year; the winner is announced each year in January and honored in April. From 1995 to 1998 the award was granted by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Uitgeversbond, the Royal Dutch Organization of Publishers; since 2000, it is granted by a separate organization.

The Truth According to Wikipedia, also referred to as Wiki's Truth, is a Dutch documentary about Wikipedia directed by IJsbrand van Veelen. It was screened at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam on 4 April 2008 and broadcast by the Dutch documentary series Backlight on Nederland 2 on 7 April 2008. It was subsequently made available through American Public Television.

"Lockerbie Revisited" is a 52-minute episode of the Dutch VPRO documentary television series Backlight which was broadcast in the Netherlands on the eve of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi's second appeal against his conviction of multiple counts of murder for his connection to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 that started at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh on 28 April 2009. The film's director, Gideon Levy, narrates in Dutch and conducts interviews in English with retired FBI officer Richard Marquise, Detective Chief Superintendent Stuart Henderson of the Scottish police, ex-FBI laboratory official Thomas Thurman, UN Observer at the Lockerbie trial Hans Köchler, author and journalist Ian Ferguson, former CIA agent Robert Baer, ex-FBI laboratory scientist Fred Whitehurst and former Lord Advocate Lord Fraser of Carmyllie.
John Dennis Liu is a Chinese American film-maker and ecologist. He is also a researcher at several institutions. In January 2015 John was named Visiting Fellow at Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. John is also Ecosystem Ambassador for the Commonland Foundation based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2017 John Liu founded Ecosystem Restoration Camps, a worldwide movement that aims to restore damaged ecosystems on a large scale.
Arjen Henrik Lubach is a Dutch comedian, author, music producer and television presenter. He hosted the weekly news satire television show Zondag met Lubach. As of 21 February 2022, he is the host of a new show on NPO 1, De Avondshow met Arjen Lubach.
Zondag met Lubach is a Dutch weekly satirical television programme that aired between 2014 and 2021, presented by Arjen Lubach and broadcast on NPO 3. Each week Lubach talked for half an hour about the news of the past week through various fragments from the media infographics and investigative journalism. The show's main scriptwriters were Tex de Wit and Pieter Jouke. The program was recorded in the main auditorium of the Theater Bellevue in Amsterdam.
Arjan Ederveen Janssen is a Dutch actor, comedian, TV scriptwriter and TV director. He participated in the TV series Theo en Thea, Kreatief met Kurk and 30 minuten and played in the musicals Hairspray and Lang en Gelukkig. He wrote the play Moord in de Kerststal. Ederveen owns a TV production company, called De Toko. His manager is Evelien Jansen.
30 minuten was a 1995 Dutch satirical mockumentary TV series, written by Arjan Ederveen and directed by Pieter Kramer. Ederveen also starred in every episode. Two series of seven episodes were produced and broadcast by the Dutch TV station VPRO between 1995 and 1997.
