Baktygul Janybekovna Jeenbaeva (born 31 July 1960) is a Kyrgyzstani politician who has been the country's Finance Minister since December 2018. [1]

Early life and education

Jeenbaeva was born on 31 July 1960 in Bishkek, then called Frunze and part of the Soviet Union. [2] Her father, Janybek Jeenbaev, a nuclear physicist, was president of the Kyrgyz Academy of Sciences. [3] She has degrees in mathematics and economics from the Kyrgyz National University. [4]

Career

Jeenbaeva worked as an economist for the production association Ak-Tilek from 1985 until 1992. She was then an economist at the Department of External and Public Relations. [2] In 2007 she became General Director of the New Television Network. [2] In 2010 she became acting Chair of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic and in 2016, chair of the Board of the State Mortgage Company. [2] [5] [6] At the time, she publicly lamented the Bank's lack of independence. [7]

Jeenbaeva has been a member of the Akshumkar political party since 2007. [2] From 6 July 2018 until 12 December 2018 she was an advisor to the president of Kyrgyzstan. [2] [5]

On 12 December 2018, the Parliament approved Jeenbaeva's candidacy as Minister of Finance with 101 members voting for her [8] after Prime Minister Mukhammedkalyi Abylgaziev proposed her for the position. [9] She was officially appointed by President Sooronbay Jeenbekov the following day. [5]

In 2019, Jeenbaeva was called as a witness in a criminal case against the Legal Representation Center for the alleged embezzlement of funds. [10] [11]

Personal life

Jeenbaeva is divorced and has a son. [2]

Aida Kasymalieva is a Kyrgyz journalist and politician who has been deputy speaker of the Supreme Council since December 2018. She has been an advocate for women's rights in the context of domestic violence, bride kidnapping and child marriages within her country.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2020 Kyrgyz parliamentary election</span>

Parliamentary elections were held in Kyrgyzstan on 4 October 2020. The results showed that pro-government parties had won a supermajority of seats. The election was subsequently annulled by the Central Election Commission during the 2020 Kyrgyzstan protests.

Japarov Üsönbek uulu Aqylbek is a Kyrgyz politician serving as Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan since 12 October 2021. He replaced Ulukbek Maripov, who had been appointed to the new role by President Sadyr Japarov on 5 May 2021. Aqılbek is also concurrently the Head of the Presidential Administration under President Japarov.
