Balaraba Ramat Yakubu (born 1959) [1] is a Nigerian author who writes in Hausa. She is a leader in the genre of littattafan soyayya or "love literature", and one of the very few Hausa-language writers whose work has been translated into English. She has also worked as a screenwriter, producer, and director of Kannywood films. Her stories have focused on issues such as forced marriages and women's education. [2]

Early life

Balaraba Ramat Yakubu is the younger sister of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, [3] who briefly served as the military ruler of Nigeria from 1975 until his assassination in 1976.

At the age of 13, she was taken out of school and forced into an early marriage. [4] She has said that this is the reason she writes in Hausa rather than English. [5]

Career

Balaraba Ramat started her career as the only woman member of the influential Kano-based writer's club Raina Kama. [6] Her first novel, Budurwar Zuciya ("Young at Heart"), was published in 1987. Her second and third novels, Alhaki Kwikwiyo Ne... ("Sin Is a Puppy That Follows You Home") and Wa zai auri jahila? ("Who Will Marry an Ignorant Woman?"), followed in 1990. Alhaki Kwikwiyo Ne... was adapted into a film by Abdulkareem Muhammed in 1998. [7]

An English translation of Alhaki Kuykuyo Ne..., Sin Is a Puppy That Follows You Home , was published in 2012 by Blaft Publications, an Indian publishing house, to positive reviews. [8] [9]

There is a literary prize named after her, the Balaraba Ramat Yakubu Literature Prize for Hausa Drama. [10]

Films

Balaraba Ramat started producing film in 1990's with Wata Shari'ar and recently she wrote and produced Juyin Sarauta, [11] a film that won about ten awards and received positive reviews from scholars and film experts [12]

Kaduna Book and Arts Festival, also known as KABAFEST, is an annual literary, cultural, and art event in Kaduna State, Nigeria that took place for the first time in July, 2017. It was organized by Book Buzz Foundation, who also organizes the annual Aké Arts and Book Festival, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government and the Gusau Institute. It was also the first book festival that occurs annually in northern Nigeria.

Sons of the Caliphate is a Nigerian political thriller drama television series created and produced by Dimbo Atiya, directed by Kenneth Gyang and executive produced by Mo Abudu of the Ebonylife TV. It originally aired on Ebonyi Life TV for two season from 13 October 2016 to 6 February 2018. Season two had a global airing exclusively on Netflix.

Make Room is a Nigerian 2018 Hausa feature film showcasing the relationship between love and pursuit of dreams in the face of terrorism, directed by Robert Peters and produced by Rogers Ofime. The film features Kannywood actors and actresses such as Yakubu Muhammed, Sani Muazu, Rekiya Attah and Usman Uzee, supported by Adams Garba, Asabe Madake, Abba Zakky and Abubakar Maina.

Ahmed Tijani Mu'azu, OON,, is a former acting chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission. He replaced Mahmood Yakubu on 9 November 2020 after his first tenure expired.

Hausa literature is any work written in the Hausa language. It includes poetry, prose, songwriting, music, and drama. Hausa literature includes folk literature, much of which has been transcribed, and provides a means of recording, preserving, and transmitting knowledge, especially in regard to social, psychological, spiritual, or political roles.

Lieutenant Colonel Bukar Suwa Dimka was a Nigerian Army officer who played a leading role in the 13 February 1976 abortive military coup against the government of General Murtala Ramat Muhammed. Dimka also participated in the Nigerian counter-coup of 1966 which toppled the government of General Aguiyi Ironsi.
