Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) is the national association of Software and information and communication technologies companies in Bangladesh. [2]

In June 2016, Mustafa Jabar was elected president of BASIS after his Digital Brigade Panel won seven of the nine directorships. The elections at this point were held triennially. [4]
On March 27, 2018, it was reported that the Bangladesh government had repealed the election of BASIS, which had been scheduled for March 31. The move extended the tenure for six months of BASIS's executive committee. [5] Syed Almas Kabir was later elected president on March 31, 2018, when the elections were held anyway upon request of the commerce ministry. [6]
In April 2018, BASIS started the Commonwealth-SheTrades initiative, with funding from the UK Department for International Development. [7] In May 2018, the BASIS website was hacked by a Myanmar hacking group. [8] According to Al Jazeera in 2018, BASIS is "the biggest umbrella organization representing the country's IT sector." [9] BASIS has offices in Dhaka. [10]
In August 2018, BASIS publicly implored RAJUK to allow BASIS members operating software companies out of commercial zones to continue operating, noting that the commercial zones then open did not allow such companies to remain open all day. BASIS at the time said that 800 of its 1,100 members had offices in non-commercial areas. [11]
The BASIS Outsourcing Award recognizes the outstanding performance of organizations and individuals in the field of outsourcing software and ITES services. In 2011, BASIS created the award. The program identifies the best performers in the outsourcing industry/community. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]
In July 2017, BASIS created the National ICT Awards. [17] In July 2018, BASIS launched the second national ICT award. [18]
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by the late Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman, after the presidential election of 1978, with a view of uniting people with a nationalist ideology. Following Rahman's assassination in 1981, his widow, Khaleda Zia, took over leadership of the party and presided as chairperson until her imprisonment, in 2018. Since then, Tarique Rahman, the son of Rahman and Zia, has served as acting chairperson and has run the affairs of the party from London.
Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is a Bangladeshi science fiction author, physicist, academic, activist and former professor of computer science and engineering and former head of the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). He achieved his PhD from University of Washington. After working 18 years as a scientist at California Institute of Technology and Bell Communications Research, he returned to Bangladesh and joined Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as a professor of Computer Science and Engineering. He retired from his teaching profession in October 2018. He is considered one of Bangladesh's top science fiction writers.

Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was a Bangladeshi politician and journalist who served as the senior assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and was convicted of war crimes during the 1971 Liberation war of Bangladesh. RAJUK Uttara Model College (RUMC) is a co-educational College in Uttara, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is situated about a kilometer north of Shahjalal International Airport. The International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh) (ICT of Bangladesh) is a domestic war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh set up in 2009 to investigate and prosecute suspects for the genocide committed in 1971 by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams during the Bangladesh Liberation War. During the 2008 general election, the Awami League (AL) pledged to try war criminals. The government set up the tribunal after the Awami League won the general election in December 2008 with a more than two-thirds majority in parliament.

The information technology sector in Bangladesh had its beginnings in nuclear research during the 1960s. Over the next few decades, computer use increased at large Bangladeshi organizations, mostly with IBM mainframe computers. Mustafa Jabbar is a Bangladeshi businessman, technology entrepreneur and a former Minister of Post and Telecommunication in the Government of Bangladesh. He also served as the president of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS). He is best known for the creation of Bijoy Bengali keyboard, which was developed in 1988, and it was most widely used Bengali input method until the release of Unicode based Avro Keyboard. He served as the president of Bangladesh Computer Samity, the national ICT organisation of Bangladesh for four consecutive periods. He is a champion of Bangla Bhasha Procholon Ain, 1987, and has been praised for promoting the Bengali language in the digital media.
