Banka Baltija was a Latvian bank which in the early 1990s was one of the largest banks in the country. It was founded in 1993, but closed down due to bankruptcy in June 1995.

History

Banka Baltija, associated with the father and son Emīls Lavents (born 1923, Odesa) and Aleksandrs Lavents  [ lv ] (born 9 August 1959, Anapa) respectively, was founded in 1993 and experienced very rapid growth. [1] It became the largest bank in Latvian by offering high interest rates to savers and attracted many clients. [2] Its assets rose from US$25 million from 1993, to 242 million dollars in 1994, reaching 500 million in 1995. The bank's capital rose from 1 million in 1993, 20 million in 1994 to 44 million in 1995. The bank employed several Chekists and had links to the “Pārdaugava” organized crime network. [1] [2] [3] The Group of 24 loan to Latvia, which later became a landmark case of government mismanagement, passed through Banka Baltija. [2] Banka Baltija had 37 branches and 49 settlement groups all over Latvia employing 1300 people. In April 1995, when a financial crisis started, Banka Baltija had 283 million dollars in deposits and had given credits of 283 dollars[ dubious ].[ citation needed ]

Bankruptcy

On June 27, 1995, following the a bank crisis, The Supreme Court of Latvia (lv) found Banka Baltija insolvent. In 2007 bank's chairman Aleksandrs Lavents and president Tālis Freimanis were sentenced to imprisonment and Alvis Līdums who was accused of very large scale embezzlement was acquitted. [4] [5] 3 March 2018 Banka Baltija was excluded from the Registry of Enterprises of Latvia. [5] "Invest-Riga", an auditing firm, liquidated the bank and completed on 22 March 2018. [5]

Riga Castle is a castle on the banks of River Daugava in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The castle was founded in 1330. Its structure was thoroughly rebuilt between 1497 and 1515. Upon the castle's seizure by the Swedes, they constructed spacious annexes in 1641. The fortress was continually augmented and reconstructed between the 17th and 19th centuries. Sometime in the 1930s, some renovation work was done by architect Eižens Laube. The Latvian government declared the castle its residence in 1938. Today it is the official residence of the President of Latvia as well as home to several museums.

Valērijs Belokoņs or Valeri Belokon is a Latvian businessman. He is a majority shareholder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Baltic International Bank; a former co-owner of Blackpool F.C. From 12 January 2010 to 4 June 2013, he served as a Trustee of The Prince's Foundation for Building Community.

Amsterdam Trade Bank (ATB) was a commercial bank registered in The Netherlands. The bank focused on providing trade financing for companies wishing to do business in former Soviet states. ATB was supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank and owned by the corporate treasury of Alfa Group.

Musiqq is a Latvian pop music duo from Liepāja formed by Marats Ogļezņevs and Emīls Balceris. The duo first gained exposure in June 2009 with the release of their first single “Klimata kontrole”("Climate control"), but on October 1 their second single "Abrakadabra" came out, which was a radio hit in Latvia and "SEB Musical Bank 2009" winner. Their debut album "Šī ir tikai mūzika"("This is just music") was released in March 2010, which included radio hits such as "Abrakadabra", "Dzimšanas diena" ("Birthday") and "Klimata kontrole". Both singers were awarded as "Gada Liepājnieks"("Liepajnieks of the year" is a prize awarded for those, who have invested their time, effort and talent into making the city a better place) in nomination "'Music" and received three Copyright infinity prizes, because their songs are the most played on the radio, television and concerts. Musiqq represented Latvia in 2011 Eurovision Song Contest Düsseldorf with the song "Angel in Disguise". They are also known as Latvian rap duo called "Bermudu Divstūris", which formed in 2011.
