The Battle of Whitney Avenue refers to the college ice hockey series between Quinnipiac Bobcats and Yale Bulldogs, both currently members of ECAC.

History

In 2006, the Quinnipiac Bobcats moved to the ECAC. Since then, Quinnipiac and the Yale Bulldogs have become one of biggest non-Ivy rivalries in the ECAC. The rivalry got its name from the fact that the two campuses are separated by a mere eight miles on Whitney Avenue from Hamden to New Haven.

The two teams met on April 13, 2013 for the fourth time in the 2012–13 season in Pittsburgh to play for the national championship. Although Quinnipiac had won the previous three meetings (all in the 2012–13 season) by a combined score of 13–3, Yale shut them out in the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey National Championship Game, 4–0.

ECAC Hockey is one of the six conferences that compete in NCAA Division I ice hockey. The conference used to be affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference, a consortium of over 300 colleges in the eastern United States. This relationship ended in 2004; however, the ECAC abbreviation was retained in the name of the hockey conference. The Yale Bulldogs men's ice hockey team represents Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and is the oldest collegiate ice hockey team in the United States. The Bulldogs compete in the Ivy League and the ECAC Hockey League (ECACHL) and play their home games at Ingalls Rink, also called the Yale Whale. The current head coach is Keith Allain, who led the Bulldogs to an Ivy League championship in his first year as head coach. Allain is assisted by former QU/UND goaltender, Josh Siembida. On April 13, 2013, the Bulldogs shut out Quinnipiac 4–0 to win their first NCAA Division I Championship.

The Quinnipiac Bobcats women's ice hockey represented Quinnipiac University in the 2009–10 NCAA Division I women's ice hockey season. The Bobcats were the most improved team in the NCAA. At season's end, the squad had won 19 contests, a 16 win improvement compared to the 2008–09 season, when Quinnipiac won only 3 games. The Bobcats set a school record with conference wins (11), and hosted a postseason game for the first time in the program's history.

Whitney Avenue is a principal arterial connecting Downtown New Haven with the town center of Hamden in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Most of the road within the city of New Haven is included in the Whitney Avenue Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The designation begins at Grove Street in the northern part of Downtown New Haven and extends through the town of Hamden up to the Cheshire town line. North of Dixwell Avenue in Hamden Center, the road is a state highway and designated as part of Route 10. From the New Haven town line to Dixwell Avenue, the road is state-maintained with an unsigned designation of State Road 707. Within New Haven, Whitney Avenue is a town road. The J route of Connecticut Transit New Haven, which connects New Haven to Waterbury, runs along Whitney Avenue.

The Quinnipiac Bobcats women's ice hockey program represents Quinnipiac University. The Bobcats have competed in ECAC Hockey since the 2005-2006 season where they replaced Vermont when the Catamounts moved to Hockey East. Prior to that season the Bobcats competed in College Hockey America for the 2004-2005 season, played as a Division I Independent for the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons, and in the ECAC Division I Eastern division for the 2001-2002 season.

The 2010–11 NCAA Division I women's ice hockey season began in October, ending with the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game in March, 2011. The Frozen Four was hosted by Mercyhurst College at Louis J. Tullio Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Kelly Babstock is a Canadian-American ice hockey player who currently plays with the Metropolitan Riveters of the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). She has Ojibwe roots and is originally from Little Current on Manitoulin Island, part of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. Babstock played collegiate ice hockey with the Quinnipiac Bobcats and, as of September 2021, remains the top point scorer in the program’s history. In the National Women's Hockey League, she played with the Connecticut Whale from 2015–2018 and with the Buffalo Beauts during the 2018–19 season. In the Whale's inaugural game on October 15, 2015, she became the first Canadian-born player to score a goal in a NWHL regular season game.

Brogan Rafferty is an American professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL).

William Riga is the current head coach for Holy Cross. Previously he was an associate head coach at Quinnipiac and helped the team reach the National Championship game in 2013 and 2016.

The 2020–21 ECAC Hockey men's ice hockey season was the 60th season of play for ECAC Hockey and took place during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season. The regular was delayed until on November 22, 2020 and conclude on March 6, 2021.

The 2022–23 Yale Bulldogs Men's ice hockey season was the 127th season of play for the program and the 61st in the ECAC Hockey conference. The Bulldogs represented Yale University and were coached by Keith Allain, in his 16th season.

The 2022–23 Quinnipiac Bobcats Men's ice hockey season was the 47th season of play for the program, the 25th at the Division I level and 18th in ECAC Hockey. The Bobcats represented Quinnipiac University in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season, were coached by Rand Pecknold in his 29th season, and played their home games at the M&T Bank Arena. The team won the 2023 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament for the first national championship in program history.
