Benny Gatot Setiono (October 31, 1943 - January 17, 2017) was an Indonesian historian. Setiono was born in Caracas, Kuningan, West Java, Indonesia. His father, Endang Sunarko (Khouw Sin Eng), was also a writer, including of New China, Friend or Foe and for the magazines 'Pantjawarna' and `Sin Po daily '.

Setiono studied at the Faculty of Economics, Res Publica University, (now known as Trisakti University), Jakarta. At level three, Benny was forced to drop out after the campus was burned by WE / KAPPI backed militias in 1965 riots. [1]

In 1999, Setiono co-founded the Chinese Indonesian Association, CORE, and in 2002 co-founded ELKASA. [1] He was the author of various articles and the book Tionghoa Dalam Pusaran Politik (Chinese in the Political Turbulence) published by ELKASA, Jakarta 2003 and translated into Chinese by Prof. Zhou Nanjing from Beijing University (2004).

According to Setiono, the outbreak of conflict with the Chinese in the 18th century was followed by increased suspicion and resentment in native Indonesians and the Dutch toward the ethnic Chinese, who were growing in number and whose wealth was increasingly visible.

Established in Jakarta before Notary James Herman Rahardjo on February 5, 1999, INTI (Perhimpunan Indonesia Tionghoa) organization was founded by Aswan Sjachril, Benny G. Setiono, Eddie Lembong, Effie Sari, Gilbert Wiryadinata, Hendra Surjana, Henry Boen, Judi W. Leonardi, Kahar Lukman, Karta Winata, Kuncoro Wibowo, Michael Utama Purnama, Nancy Widjaja, Ronald Sjarif, Sudhamek Agoeng Waspodo Soenjoto, Teddy Sugianto, and Tjiandra Widjaja Wong.

Demak is a regency located in the Indonesian province of Central Java, on northern coast of the island. Puteri Indonesia National beauty pageant competition in Indonesia, beauty pageant organization

Puteri Indonesia is a national beauty pageant in Indonesia that selects the winners to represent Indonesia in two of the Big Four major international beauty pageants; namely the Miss Universe and Miss International competitions. In the same event, the pageant also selects representative for Miss Supranational pageant. The Puteri Indonesia pageant is traditionally held in March, alongside the celebration for International Women's Day. Malari incident

The Malari incident was a student demonstration and riot that happened from 15 to 16 January 1974. In reaction to a state visit by the Japanese Prime Minister, Kakuei Tanaka, students held a demonstration protesting corruption, high prices, and inequality in foreign investments. After provocation by suspected agent provocateurs, the demonstrations became riots, which eventually turned into a pogrom. By the end of the incident, 11 protestors had been killed and hundreds of cars and buildings destroyed.

Discrimination against people of Chinese descent in Indonesia has been carried out by governments in Indonesia since the time of the Dutch East India Company. Serious violence against Chinese people has occurred at irregular intervals since 1740, when the soldiers of the Dutch East India Company and other ethnic groups from Batavia killed up to 10,000 people of Chinese descent during the Chinezenmoord. The worst outbreaks took place in 1946-49 during the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch rule. There were significant outbreaks in the early 1960s. Violence against Chinese also took place in 1965 after the failed coup attempt during anti-communist purges, the main target of the killings were Native Indonesian communists. In 1998, many Chinese businesses were burned down and Chinese women were raped brutally.

The Tanjung Priok massacre was an incident that occurred in the port area of Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, Indonesia in 1984. Government reports give a total of 24 killed and 54 injured, while survivors report over 100 killed.

Mira Widjaja (Wong), or Mira W., is a highly popular Indonesian author. Boenga Roos dari Tjikembang is a 1931 film from the Dutch East Indies directed, produced, and filmed by The Teng Chun. Based on a 1927 novel of the same name, it follows the complicated romantic situations of two generations of ethnic Chinese in the Indies. An early example of domestic sound films, the film was remade in 1975.

Lie Kim Hok Chinese-Indonesian writer and teacher (1853–1912)

Lie Kim Hok was a peranakan Chinese teacher, writer, and social worker active in the Dutch East Indies and styled the "father of Chinese Malay literature". Born in Buitenzorg, West Java, Lie received his formal education in missionary schools and by the 1870s was fluent in Sundanese, vernacular Malay, and Dutch, though he was unable to understand Chinese. In the mid-1870s he married and began working as the editor of two periodicals published by his teacher and mentor D. J. van der Linden. Lie left the position in 1880. His wife died the following year. Lie published his first books, including the critically acclaimed syair (poem) Sair Tjerita Siti Akbari and grammar book Malajoe Batawi, in 1884. When van der Linden died the following year, Lie purchased the printing press and opened his own company.

Loa Sek Hie Sia was a colonial Indonesian politician, parliamentarian and the founding Voorzitter or chairman of the controversial, ethnic-Chinese self-defense force Pao An Tui. He was a Peranakan of Chinese-Indonesian, Austrian and Javanese descent. In his political career, he campaigned against racial discrimination and demanded better healthcare and education for ethnic Chinese in the Dutch East Indies.

Pao An Tui

Pao An Tui, sometimes incorrectly spelt Po An Tui or Poh An Tui, was a self-defense force of the Chinese-Indonesian community during the Indonesian Revolution (1945–1950). The group has often been accused of pro-Dutch sympathies in the struggle for Indonesian independence from Dutch colonial rule.

Lim Soe Keng Sia, also known as Liem Soe King Sia, Soe King Sia or Lim Soukeng Sia, was a prominent Peranakan figure in Batavia, the Dutch East Indies, best known for his rivalry with Betawi playboy Oey Tamba Sia. He was also administrator of the Ngo Ho Tjiang Kongsi, the most influential consortium of opium monopolists in early to mid-19th century Batavia.

The Chinese Indonesian Democratic Party was a political party that existed during the Guided Democracy era in Indonesia, from 1948 until 1965. During the height of its popularity in the mid-1960s the paper had the second highest circulation of any newspaper in Indonesia.

Oey Giok Koen

Oey Giok Koen, Kapitein der Chinezen was a Chinese-Indonesian public figure, bureaucrat and Landheer, best known for his role as Kapitein der Chinezen of Tangerang and Meester Cornelis, and as one of the richest landowners in the Dutch East Indies. As Kapitein, he headed the local Chinese civil administration in Tangerang and Meester Cornelis as part of the Dutch colonial system of 'indirect rule'. In 1893, he bought the particuliere landen or private domains of Tigaraksa and Pondok Kosambi.
