Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (born 3 September 1959) is a businessman and art collector. He is the grandson of Pablo Picasso and the son of Paul and Christine Ruiz-Picasso. He curates international exhibitions dedicated to Pablo Picasso.

Biography

Bernard Ruiz-Picasso is the son of Paul Joseph Ruiz-Picasso/Paulo Picasso, the first child of Pablo Picasso and his wife Olga Khokhlova, and is therefore the only "legitimate heir" of his grandfather's works, according to the legal system in place before 2002, together with his half-sister Marina Picasso. [1] As such he is considered to be the person with the most important collection of Picasso's works. [1] He organised his first exhibition, presenting seventy paintings from his collections, in 2000 at the Kunstforum in Vienna, Austria. [1]

Personal life

He is married to the art dealer and gallery owner Almine Rech, with whom he founded in 2002 the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte, which promotes contemporary art. [2]

He lives in Monaco. With his wife, he has developed a collection of contemporary art. [3]

Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte

The Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA) is a foundation incorporated under Spanish law, created in 2002, and is made up by a collection of works by Pablo Picasso and contemporary artists. Bernard Ruiz-Picasso is co-president of FABA. [2]

FABA preserves a collection of works by Picasso and contemporary artists. The foundation supports creation through exhibitions, and promotes the understanding and study of Picasso's works.

Château de Boisgeloup, which Ruiz-Picasso inherited in 1975, was opened to the public in 2012 to show Picasso's studio and a series of contemporary art exhibitions starting with Un Soir à Boisgeloup. [4]

Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, together with his mother Christine Ruiz-Picasso co-founded the Picasso Museum in Málaga which opened in 2003. He is President of the Advisory Council of the museum. [5] On that occasion, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso donated 180 works to establish the museum's collection. [6] He regularly lends other works from his collection to the Picasso Museum in Málaga. [7] [8]

The Museum is governed by the Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga. The foundation is an entity that has full control over the collection and holdings of the museum. It owns the Palacio de Buenavista, the headquarters of the institution. [9]

The Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga aims to ensure the preservation, exhibition, study and dissemination of the work of Pablo Picasso. It conceives the Picasso Museum of Malaga as a centre of projection and, cultural and social impulse, where visitors come not only to enjoy the legacy of Pablo Picasso, but also to be part of didactic activities and to benefit from cultural facilities. Exhibitions

Bernard Ruiz-Picasso organised an exhibition with the Kunstforum in Vienna and the Kunsthalle in Tübingen (Germany) which hosted the exhibition in January 2002. For the first time, an important part of his collection was exhibited : 70 paintings painted between 1899 and 1972, along with some thirty drawings from the Cubist period. [1]

In 2017, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso was co-curator of an exhibition devoted to Olga, Picasso's first wife, at the Musée Picasso in Paris. [10] The same year, he lent 166 works to the Picasso Museum in Malaga for a three-year temporary exhibition entitled "Pablo Picasso, New Collection ". [6]

Several exhibitions are organised in cooperation with the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte: in 2019 the exhibition "Calder-Picasso" at the Picasso Museum in Paris, in 2020 the exhibition "Les Musiques de Picasso" at the Cité de la Musique in Paris. [11]

Buenavista Palace is a historical edifice in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. It was built in the first half of the 16th century for Diego de Cazalla on the ruins of a Nasrid palace. Las Meninas is a series of 58 paintings that Pablo Picasso painted in 1957 by performing a comprehensive analysis, reinterpreting and recreating several times Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez. The suite is fully preserved at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona and is the only complete series of the artist that remains together. This is a very extensive survey work, which consists of 45 performances of the original picture, 9 scenes of a dove, 3 landscapes and a portrait of Jacqueline.

Josefa Ruiz Blasco was the aunt of Pablo Picasso and the eldest of the eleven brothers and sisters of the Ruiz Blasco family. he lived with her sister and brother Matilde and José in the Plaça de la Merced of Málaga until he got married and then she went to live with her youngest brother Salvador.

Science and Charity is an oil on canvas painting by Pablo Picasso, which he painted in Barcelona in 1897. It is an example of one of Picasso's earliest works, as he painted it when he was only 15 years old. The painting depicts a formal composition of a sick patient in bed, attended by a doctor and a nun holding a child. It was the culmination of Picasso's academic training and displays his talent as an artist before he moved away from this style to pursue his own artistic career. <i>Le Repos</i> (Picasso) Painting by Pablo Picasso

Le Repos is an oil-on-canvas painting created by Pablo Picasso in 1932. It depicts a portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, the artist's lover and muse, in a sleeping pose. The painting was produced in the midst of their relationship and is a demonstration of Picasso's love for his mistress. Le Repos was one of a series of sleeping portraits of Walter that Picasso created in 1932. On 14 May 2018, the painting achieved a value of $36.9 million when it was sold at Sotheby's auction.

Château de Boisgeloup is an 18th-century château near Gisors in Eure, Normandy, formerly owned by Pablo Picasso and now a private art gallery run by his grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and gallerist Almine Rech.
