Betty Kuntiwa Pumani is an Aboriginal Australian artist from Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara in South Australia. Her paintings have won several awards, including the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) and the 2017 Wynne Prize for landscape art. [1]

Pumani is one of the traditional owners (nguraritja) of the Indigenous Protected Area of Antara, which is located south of the Everard Ranges. [2] She is one of several Antara artists who live and show their work in Mimili, South Australia, including her late mother Kunmanara (Milatjari) Pumani and her daughter Josina Nyarpingku Pumani. [2]

Biography

Pumani was born in 1963 near Perentie Bore, South Australia, about 30 km from Mimili Community. At Mimili she worked at the store, then at the clinic as a traditional healer. She later became a teacher at the local school. [3]

In 2007 she began painting at the Mimili Maku Art Centre. [3]

Her works

Betty paints Antara, her mother's country. The paintings map its significance and tell its stories. Using a restricted palette she represents the strength of Anangu connection to country. [3] She is being increasingly recognised for her use of vibrant reds and contrasting whites and her large scale compositions. [4]

Awards

In 2016, Pumani won the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) $5,000 general painting prize with a depiction of Antara. [1]

In 2017, a different painting of Antara won the $50,000 Wynne Prize for landscape art. [1] This win prompted criticism from John Olsen, a former winner of the Wynne prize and former judge for the related Archibald Prize in portraiture, who objected to the quality of that year's winners and questioned whether Pumani's Antara qualified as a landscape painting. [5] Olsen's comments "caused a storm of justified outrage," and art critic Susan McCulloch responded to by publishing a brief history of Antara and Aboriginal tjukurpa ("dreaming"). [2]

In 2020, a diptych by Pumani and her daughter Marina Pumani Brown was a NATSIAA finalist. [6]

Some of the aṉangu (people) of the Western Desert cultural bloc, in particular Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra peoples, inhabit the Lands.

Mimili is an Aboriginal community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in South Australia, comprising one of the six main communities on "The Lands". At the 2016 Australian census, Mimili had a population of 243.

Linda Yunkata Syddick Napaltjarri is a Pintupi- and Pitjantjatjara- speaking Indigenous artist from Australia's Western Desert region. Her father was killed when she was young; her mother later married Shorty Lungkarta Tjungarrayi, an artist whose work was a significant influence on Linda Syddick's painting.

Contemporary Indigenous Australian art is the modern art work produced by Indigenous Australians, that is, Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people. It is generally regarded as beginning in 1971 with a painting movement that started at Papunya, northwest of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, involving Aboriginal artists such as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, and facilitated by white Australian teacher and art worker Geoffrey Bardon. The movement spawned widespread interest across rural and remote Aboriginal Australia in creating art, while contemporary Indigenous art of a different nature also emerged in urban centres; together they have become central to Australian art. Tjungkara Ken is a Pitjantjatjara artist from Amata, South Australia, in the APY lands. She began painting in 1997, when Minymaku Arts was opened by the women of Amaṯa. She started painting professionally in 2008. By that time, the artists' co-operative had been renamed Tjala Arts.

Yukultji Napangati is an Aboriginal Australian artist. She is a painter of the Papunya Tula group of artists. She is part of a generation of female painters who followed in the footsteps of the original male Papunya Tula artists.

Milatjari Pumani is an Aboriginal Australian artist from Mimili in South Australia. She is perhaps the most well-known artist from this community, and the first to gain a significant level of success for the community's centre, Mimili Maku. Her eldest daughter, Ngupulya, is also a successful painter.

Ngupulya Pumani, also known as Margaret Pumani, is an Australian Aboriginal artist from South Australia.

Tarnanthi is a Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art held in Adelaide, South Australia, annually. Presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) in association with the South Australian Government and BHP. It is curated by Nici Cumpston.

Vincent Namatjira is an Aboriginal Australian artist living in Indulkana, in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara in South Australia. He has won many art awards, and after being nominated for the Archibald Prize several times, he became the first Aboriginal person to win it in 2020. He is the great-grandson of the Arrente watercolour artist Albert Namatjira.

Maringka Tunkin is a Pitjantjatjara artist from Central Australia.

Barbara Mbitjana Moore is an Anmatyerre woman who grew up in Ti-Tree in the Northern Territory, moving later to Amata in South Australia's Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. In April 2003, Moore began painting at Amata's Tjala Arts, and, since then, has received widespread recognition. Moore won a National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2012 and has been a finalist in many other years. Moore has also been a finalist for the Wynne Prize.

Mimili Maku Arts, often referred to as Mimili Maku, is an Aboriginal-owned and -led arts centre located in the remote community of Mimili in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands, in the remote north-west of South Australia.

Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin is an Aboriginal Australian artist from South Australia. She is a painter, and director of Mimili Maku Arts.
