Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California,as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk was born and raised in New York,where he acknowledged his homosexuality as an adolescent,but chose to pursue sexual relationships with secrecy and discretion well into his adult years. His experience in the counterculture of the 1960s caused him to shed many of his conservative views about individual freedom and the expression of sexuality.
Daniel James White was an American politician who assassinated George Moscone,the mayor of San Francisco,and Harvey Milk,a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors,inside City Hall on November 27,1978. White was convicted of manslaughter for the deaths of Milk and Moscone and served five years of a seven-year prison sentence. Less than two years after his release,he returned to San Francisco and later died by suicide.

John Laird,an American politician,is the California State Senator for District 17,since 7 December 2020,and was Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency from 2011 to 2019 and a former legislator who represented the 27th district in the California State Assembly until 2008. The 27th district included parts of Santa Clara County,Santa Cruz County and Monterey County. Laird was one of the first two openly gay men to serve in the California legislature. Laird became one of the United States' first openly gay mayors in 1983 when he took over the mayoralty of the city of Santa Cruz,California.
Ken Yeager is an American politician. He served on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors,representing District 4. First elected to the board in 2006,he represented the cities of Campbell and Santa Clara,as well as west San Jose and the Burbank and Cambrian neighborhoods. Previously,Yeager served on the San Jose City Council from 2000 to 2006. Before that,he served two terms on the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Board. He was a candidate for the 23rd district seat in the California State Assembly in 1996,coming in second.

John Avalos is an American politician. He served two terms as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 2008 to 2016. Avalos represented District 11 in San Francisco,consisting of the Crocker-Amazon,Excelsior,Ingleside,Oceanview,and Outer Mission districts. Avalos was elected on November 4,2008 in the 2008 San Francisco election and took office on January 8,2009. He was re-elected in the 2012 San Francisco election with 94 percent of the vote,and termed out of office in January 2017.
Richard S. Gordon is an American Democratic politician from Menlo Park,California. He served in the California State Assembly as a representative for the 24th district. Gordon previously served as Assembly representative for the 21st district,President of the California State Association of Counties,and a member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Gordon has been openly gay for the entirety of his political career. In 1992 he was the first openly gay candidate in San Mateo County history.

Myrna Melgar is an American politician currently serving as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for District 7 since January 8,2021. Melgar is the first woman elected to represent District 7. Additionally,she is the first Jewish Latina to serve on the Board of Supervisors after the implementation of District elections in 2004.
