Tashi Air Pvt. Ltd, trading as Bhutan Airlines, is Bhutan's first private airline. [2] Its head office is in Thimphu. [3]

The airline resumed services on 10 October 2013, beginning its first international flights to India and Thailand. [4] [5] The airline served the cities of Jakar and Trashigang in Bhutan from their commencement until June 2012, suspending them due to increasing financial losses; however, following an agreement with the Bhutan government, the airline has resumed a full schedule of flights including Kolkata to Paro, Bhutan. [6]

History

The airline, then known as Tashi Air, was launched on 4 December 2011. [7] The airline is a subsidiary of the Tashi Group.[ who? ] The airline began regular scheduled flights to Bathpalathang and Yonphula on 18 December 2011. [8] After only six months of operation, however, the airline asked the Bhutanese Government for permission to suspend domestic flights. [9]

The airline resumed services on 10 October 2013 as Bhutan Airlines, having secured the wet lease of a single Airbus A320 aircraft from a Lithuanian-based company. Flights to Kolkata and continuing on to Bangkok were offered initially. [5] The airline was required to resume domestic flights by October 2014, per an agreement with the Government of Bhutan. [10] Following the completion of its wet lease contract, Tashi Air acquired an Airbus A319 aircraft with a seating capacity of 122 passengers on 1 May 2014. [11] It received a second Airbus A319 on 30 July 2014.

Offices

Bhutan Airlines' head office is located in Tashi Mall, opposite Taj Tashi Hotel in Thimpu. The airline also has another office in Paro along with the airport office. The major offices of Bhutan Airlines are located in Kolkata, India and in Bangkok, Thailand - where they are represented by OMG Experience Co., Ltd. as GSA (General Sales Agent in Thailand). [12] Other offices are located in Kathmandu, Nepal and in Malaysia. [13]

The airline was awaiting clearance during 2015 to operate flights to Bagdogra Airport, India. It was also hoping to start operations from Durgapur, once MoU was signed between Tashi Air and BAPL Durgapur in January 2016.[ specify ] Other planned destinations include Dhaka, Singapore, Dubai, and Hong Kong. Changlimithang Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan, which serves as the national stadium. It is predominantly used for football matches and is the home of the Bhutan national football team, other national selections and a number of Thimphu-based football clubs. The stadium also regularly plays host to women's football, archery tournaments, minifootball and some volleyball matches. The stadium was initially constructed in 1974 for the coronation of the fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, but was completely refurbished in 2007 in advance of the coronation of the fifth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Floodlights were added to the football pitch in 2009 and an evergreen turf laid in 2012, to coincide with the start of the first season of the National League. Located 2,300 meters (7,500 ft) above sea level, the stadium is one of the highest in the world. It has raised numerous controversies in footballing circles, as its significant altitude affects the absorption of oxygen in the human body, offering considerable advantage to the home teams who are more accustomed to such conditions.

Jakar is a town in the central-eastern region of Bhutan. It is the district capital of Bumthang District and the location of Jakar Dzong, the regional dzong fortress. The name Jakar roughly translates as "white bird" in reference to its foundation myth, according to which a roosting white bird signalled the proper and auspicious location to found a monastery around 1549.

Tourism in Bhutan began in 1974, when the Government of Bhutan, in an effort to raise revenue and to promote Bhutanese unique culture and traditions to the outside world, opened its isolated country to foreigners. In 1974 a total of 287 tourists visited the Kingdom of Bhutan. The number of tourists visiting Bhutan increased to 2,850 in 1992, and rose dramatically to 7,158 in 1999. By the late 1980s tourism contributed over US$2 million in annual revenue.

Drukpol FC has won the A-Division championship a record eight times, more than any other team in Bhutan. The team's home ground was Changlimithang Stadium.

Bathpalathang Airport is a domestic Bhutanese airport in Jakar (Bjakar), Bumthang District. One of only four airports in the country, it opened on 17 December 2011 with flights to Paro. The airport suspended operations in July 2012 due to runway damage, but it has since reopened to limited service.

The inaugural edition was held in 2004, replacing the Federation Cup which was last played in 2002, which in turn has its origin traces back to its original name Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial Gold Cup of the 1990s. The rebranded Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial Gold Cup was revived in 2019.

Lhendup Dorji is a Bhutanese international footballer who currently plays for Lonestar Kashmir FC in the I-League 2nd Division.

Tashi Choden Chombal is a Bhutanese model and beauty pageant titleholder. In 2022, she won the title of Miss Bhutan, representing her country at the Miss Universe pageant. She is one of the first openly homosexual people in her home country, Bhutan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tenchen Choeling nunnery</span>

Tenchen Choeling Nunnery is a Buddhist College (shedra) for nuns, situated above Kyichu Lhakhang, overlooking the Paro Valley in Bhutan. The Dratshang’s Dorji Lopon appointed Khenpo Kinga Norbu as the new Principal in January 2023, following his three years as Lam of the Chimi Lhakhang in Punakha. He had also served as head teacher at Semtokha Shedra.
