The ward covers most of the area of the former ward of Boscombe East, which elected three councillors to Bournemouth Borough Council.

In 2020, Christchurch Independents councillor Colin Bungey died, leading to a by-election being held the next year in the Commons Ward, for which the Christchurch Independents were registered as a political party.
