Brian Gaine is an American football executive who works as the assistant general manager for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL). He served as the general manager of the Houston Texans from 2018 to 2019. [1] Gaine began his executive career in 1999 with the New York Jets as a scout and worked in the scouting departments of the Bills, Texans, Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys. [2]

Early life and education

Gaine was born to Jim and Alice Gaine, both immigrants from Ireland, and is the youngest of five brothers. Raised in Pearl River, New York, he attended Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, New Jersey, where he played tight end on football team. He is a member of the school's Hall of Fame. Gaine attended college at the University of Maine, and played for the Maine Black Bears football team. [2] [3]

Playing career

After going undrafted in the 1995 NFL Draft, Gaine signed with the New York Jets and spent time on the team's practice squad throughout the season. Gaine also spent time with the New York Giants in 1996, and the Kansas City Chiefs in 1997, but did not appear in a game after spending each year on the practice squad. [3]

Executive career

After Gaine's playing career ended, he was hired as a scout by the New York Jets in 1999, and worked in that capacity for the team until 2004. [4] After his tenure with the Jets, Gaine became the assistant director of pro scouting for the Dallas Cowboys, a role he held from 2005 to 2007. [2]

After Cowboys' head coach Bill Parcells, who Gaine has cited as one of his biggest influences, retired from coaching and took an executive position with the Miami Dolphins, Gaine followed him and was named the assistant director of pro personnel of the team. [2] While Parcells left the team after the 2010 season, Gaine stayed with the team until 2013, becoming director of player personnel in 2011 and assistant general manager in 2012.

Gaine was hired by the Houston Texans for the first time in 2014, and worked as the team's director of player personnel for three seasons. Prior to the 2017 season, Gaine was hired in the same capacity by the Buffalo Bills, and spent one season in Buffalo. [5]

Gaine was hired as the Texans's general manager in January 2018 after the previous general manager, Rick Smith, took a leave of absence. [5] [6] On June 7, 2019, Gaine was fired by the Texans after only one season as GM. [1] His firing took place after a former security coordinator filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which stated that Gaine had targeted African-American employees for dismissal. The Texans organization stated that the complaint was unrelated to the decision to fire Gaine. [7] Later, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane, after hiring Gaine in a different capacity, described the allegations as "baseless". [8]

On July 23, 2019, Gaine was rehired by the Bills as a senior personnel advisor. [9] On June 7, 2022, he was promoted to assistant general manager of the Bills. [10]

Aaron Devone Glenn is an American football coach and former cornerback who is the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the defensive backs coach for the New Orleans Saints from 2016 to 2020 and also served as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns.

The 2008 Miami Dolphins season was the franchise's 39th season in the National Football League, the 43rd overall and the first under new head coach Tony Sparano. During the regular season the Dolphins completed the greatest single-season turnaround in NFL history, going from a 1–15 regular season record in 2007 to an 11–5 record in 2008. The previous record for most improved team one year after a 1–15 season belonged to the 1997 New York Jets, who went 9–7. The 1999 Indianapolis Colts were the only other team to accomplish a 10-game turnaround, winning 13 games after winning 3 in 1998, which was also the first year of the Peyton Manning era. Additionally, Miami won the AFC East, becoming the first team in NFL history to win their division after only having one win the previous season. The division title also snapped the Patriots' 5-year streak of winning the AFC East. Their season would come to an end in the Wild Card round when they were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens, which coincidentally, was also the only team they beat last season in overtime to save the Dolphins from suffering a winless season. With their 11–5 record and division title, the Dolphins had hopes of achieving their first playoff victory since 2000, or to possibly become the first team ever to make the Super Bowl after winning only one game the previous season, similar to how the Carolina Panthers went 1–15 in 2001 and made Super Bowl XXXVIII just two seasons later.

Rick Smith is an American football executive. He served as the general manager of the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL) from 2006 to 2017. Smith also served as the team's executive vice president of football operations from 2012 to 2017.

Chris Polian is an American football executive who is the director of pro personnel for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served over ten years as a scout and executive with the Indianapolis Colts, including as their general manager, and has also worked for the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and Jacksonville Jaguars. He is the son of former NFL general manager and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Polian and brother of college coach Brian Polian.

Malik Boyd is an American football executive. Boyd is the Senior Director of Pro Personnel for the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League. In 2014, Boyd received the Fritz Pollard Alliance NFC Scout of the Year Award as the Western Regional College Scout for the Arizona Cardinals. Boyd played for the Minnesota Vikings as a defensive back in 1994 and 1995.

Joseph Schoen is an American football executive who is the general manager of the New York Giants, of the National Football League (NFL). Schoen previously served as the assistant general manager for the Buffalo Bills from 2017 to 2021. Schoen began his NFL career as a scout for the Carolina Panthers before serving in the scouting department for the Miami Dolphins from 2008 to 2016 and joining the Bills in 2017.
