The brown four-eyed opossum (Metachirus nudicaudatus) is a pouchless marsupial [3] of the family Didelphidae. It is found in different forested habitats of Central and South America, [2] from Nicaragua to Brazil and northern Argentina, [1] including southeastern Colombia, Paraguay and eastern Peru and Bolivia, at elevations from sea level to 1,500 m (4,900 ft). [2] It is the only recognized species in the genus Metachirus, [1] but molecular phylogenetics studies suggest that it should probably be split into several species. [2] Population densities are usually low, and it is uncommon in parts of Central America. [2] A density of 25.6/km2 (66/sq mi) was reported near Manaus, Brazil. [3] Its karyotype has 2n = 14 and FN = 24. [3]
It is a nocturnal, solitary, [2] strongly terrestrial and omnivorous animal, feeding on fruits, small vertebrates and invertebrates. [3]
The brown four-eyed opossum builds nests made of leaves and twigs in tree branches or under rocks and logs. [4] It is seasonally polyestrous and the litter size varies from one to nine. [3]

The Paraguayan fat-tailed mouse opossum is a species of opossum in the family Didelphidae. It is found in forested areas of Brazil and Paraguay. It is known only from a few specimens. For two listed specimens, one had a head-and-body length of about 135 mm and a tail length of about 140 mm, while the other had a head-and-body length of about 120 mm and a tail length of about 155 mm. Most of its fur is gray, but the shoulder areas are reddish gray, and the ventral fur is pure white or creamy white. There is also a ring of black fur surrounding each eye. The ventral surface of the tail is white. The dorsal surface of the tail is gray for the first one third to one half of its length ; the remainder of the dorsal surface of the tail is white. Its head-and-body length is about 95 millimeters, and its tail length is about 72 millimeters. It is very similar to T. pallidor. Its tail may be nonprehensile. The species is named after Iranian epidemiologist Y. Karimi. It is threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation due to agriculture and ranching.
Gigantorhynchus is a genus of Acanthocephala that parasitize marsupials, anteaters, and possibly baboons by attaching themselves to the intestines using their hook-covered proboscis. Their life cycle includes an egg stage found in host feces, a cystacanth (larval) stage in an intermediate host such as termites, and an adult stage where cystacanths mature in the intestines of the host. This genus is characterized by a cylindrical proboscis with a crown of robust hooks at the apex followed by numerous small hooks on the rest of the proboscis, a long body with pseudosegmentation, filiform lemnisci, and ellipsoid testes. The largest known specimen is the female G. ortizi with a length of around 240 millimetres (9.4 in) and a width of 2 millimetres (0.08 in). Genetic analysis on one species of Gigantorhynchus places it with the related genus Mediorhynchus in the family Gigantorhynchidae. Six species in this genus are distributed across Central and South America and possibly Zimbabwe. Infestation by a Gigantorhynchus species may cause partial obstructions of the intestines, severe lesions of the intestinal wall, and may lead to death.
