Bruce Irons (born November 16, 1979) is an American regularfoot professional surfer from Hanalei, Kauai and is often regarded as one of the best tuberiders of all time. [1] [2] He is the younger brother of three-time world champion Andy Irons.

Background and early years

Born in Hanalei, Kauai, he was raised on the North Shore where he began surfing at age seven. After a successful amateur career with several wins in the United States Surfing Championships, he went pro shortly after graduating high school.

Professional surfing career

After placing second in 1998 and third in 2000, he defeated eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater to win the 2001 Billabong Pipeline Masters event. On October 3, 2004 after qualifying for the World championship tour, he again defeated the seven-time champion in the semi-finals at the Association of Surfing Professionals Quiksilver Pro France event, but lost to his older brother Andy Irons in the final. Later, on December 15, 2004, he won the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau event with a perfect score of 100, in waves that exceeded 40 feet (12m) at O'ahu's Waimea Bay. Soon after, he dazzled crowds by making the final and placing fourth in the Pipe Masters, barely re-qualifying for the 2005 tour.

On August 3, 2008 Irons defeated Freddy Patacchia to win the Rip Curl Pro Search 2008 held in Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia. It was his first win on the ASP championship tour.

On November 21, 2012 Irons split with his longtime sponsor Volcom, where he'd been for nearly 20 years, helping shape the company's identity. On December 12, 2012 Irons signed a long-term deal with Fox Clothing. On November 30, 2015 Irons signed with RVCA after leaving Fox Clothing. [3]

In 2005, Irons starred in the Volcom funded autobiographical documentary film, entitled The Bruce Movie. The film was shot using 16mm, Super 8 and 35mm format and filmed on location in Hawaii, Indonesia, Australia, Tahiti, California, France and South Africa, and while popular in the surfing community, did not cut through to mainstream release. [7] [8] Irons was in the cast of the 2007 Australian documentary film about the Sydney surf gang, the Bra Boys, entitled Bra Boys: Blood is Thicker than Water . The film's official cast included eleven-time world champion, Kelly Slater, and surfing legends Mark Occhilupo, Irons, Laird Hamilton and approximately 40 other well known surfers. [9]

The Banzai Pipeline, or simply Pipeline or Pipe, is a surf reef break located in Hawaii, off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on O'ahu's North Shore. A reef break is an area in the ocean where waves start to break once they reach the shallows of a reef. Pipeline is known for huge waves that break in shallow water just above a sharp and cavernous reef, forming large, hollow, thick curls of water that surfers can tube ride. There are three reefs at Pipeline in progressively deeper water farther out to sea that activate according to the increasing size of approaching ocean swells.

The Bra Boys are a gang centred on surf culture, founded and based in Maroubra, an eastern suburb of Sydney, in the 1990s. The gang has gained notoriety through violence and alleged links to organised crime, as well as some community activism. The Bra Boys achieved national and international media attention in 2007 with the release of a feature-length documentary entitled Bra Boys: Blood Is Thicker than Water, written and directed by members of the group, and narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe.

"The Eddie", also known as The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, is a big wave surfing tournament held at Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The tournament is named for native Hawaiian, champion big wave surfer, and life-saving Waimea Bay lifeguard, Eddie Aikau. Created in 1984 at nearby Sunset Beach, the invitational tournament moved to the notoriously big waved Waimea Bay, where Aikau's family maintains an ancestral tradition as caretakers of the Waimea Valley. It was formerly known as the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau after its sponsor Quiksilver, but the company and the Aikau family could not agree to terms for a new contract after the previous one expired in 2016.

Damien Hobgood is a professional surfer from Satellite Beach, Florida. He is known for having once held the highest two-wave grand final score in pro surfing by scoring 19.9 out of 20 at The Quiksilver Pro Fiji in 2004 until Kelly Slater eclipsed it the following year at Teahupo'o in the final with a perfect 20. He is also known for his starring role in the autobiographical documentary film "And Two If By Sea" narrated by comedian Daniel Tosh.

<i>Bra Boys</i> (film) 2007 Australian film

Bra Boys is a 2007 Australian documentary film about a surf gang on Sydney's Maroubra Beach released in March 2007. The film details a story of the Bra Boys from the viewpoint of the gang members, particularly the Abbertons. Sunny Abberton wrote and co-directed the film with Macario De Souza. Actor Russell Crowe was producer and provided narration. The film's official cast included 49 well known surfers from Bra Boys members Evan Faulks and Richie 'Vas' Vaculik to ten-time world champion Kelly Slater. Other participating prominent surfers include Mark Occhilupo, Bruce Irons, and Laird Hamilton.

The Fiji Pro was an event on the WSL Championship Tour. The event was held at Namotu in Tavarua, Fiji, and ran from 1999 to 2008, and then was resurrected in 2012. The competition was cancelled in 2018 due to lack of a sponsor.

Kala Alexander is a Hawaiian surfer, surf gang co-founder and actor. He founded the Wolfpak surf gang on the North Shore of Oahu. In addition, Alexander is an actor, playing roles in projects such as Blue Crush, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Hawaii Five-0.

Damien Fahrenfort, also known as "Dooma", is a South African business person, professional surfer, web-content creator, producer and journalist born in Cape Town, South Africa.

Jack Robinson is an Australian professional surfer who competes on the World Surf League Men's Championship Tour. He was crowned surfer of the year twice at the Australian Surfing Awards in 2020 and 2021. Robinson is often considered to one of the best barrel riders of the current days. Robinson did his best WSL performance in 2022 where he finished 3rd on the final rankings. He qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games.
