Sunil Dutt was an Indian film actor, producer, director and politician. He was the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Manmohan Singh government (2004–2005). He was a former Sheriff of Mumbai. He is the father of actor Sanjay Dutt and politician Priya Dutt.

The 1998 Wandhama Ganderbal massacre refers to the killings of 26 Kashmiri Hindus in the town of Wandhama in Jammu and Kashmir on 25 January 1998. The victims included four children and nine women. The Lashkar-e-Taiba/ Hizbul Mujahideen was blamed for perpetrating the massacre.
Roja (transl. Rose) is a 1992 Indian Tamil-language romantic thriller film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. Both movies had a very good theatrical run and were accepted by audiences widely.This film marks hindi actor Pankaj Kapur's Tamil debut.

Western Pahari Cinema or Pahariwood refers to cinema in Western Pahari languages especially Dogri language, which is included in the Schedule VIII of the Constitution, spoken primarily in the Jammu Division region of Jammu and Kashmir state and Himachal Pradesh of India.
The Exodus of Kashmiri Hindus, also sometimes known as the Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, refers to the series of anti-Hindu pogroms and attacks that took place shortly after the inception of the Muslim-dominated insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989, which eventually forced Kashmiri Hindu Pandits out of the Kashmir Valley. The peak phase of the exodus was in the early 1990s, when Kashmiri Hindus, as a result of being targeted by the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front and other pro-Pakistan Islamist insurgents, fled from the Kashmir Valley to seek refuge elsewhere in India. As of 2016, only 2,000–3,000 Kashmiri Hindus remain in the Kashmir Valley compared to approximately 300,000–600,000 in 1990. Consequently, 19 January 1990 is widely known by Kashmiri Hindus as "Exodus Day", in memory of the Kashmiri Hindus who were either killed or forced out of Kashmir.

The film is based on the love story of a Kashmiri Pandit couple at the peak of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir during the 1990s and the subsequent exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley. The film was released on 7 February 2020.
