The Bulla Loca mine disaster occurred on February 20, 2024, when an illegal gold mine called Bulla Loca, located in La Paragua, in the Angostura Municipality Bolivar in Venezuela collapsed leaving at least a dozen people dead, although the exact number of people killed varies among authorities. Background

Actually, the Venezuelan economy is faces a series of coyuntural problems that is affecting the local population, which has motivated its inhabitants to find ways to support themselves at home, in which they have chosen to explore mines illegally which contravenes Venezuelan laws and for which they have created numerous environmental problems[ citation needed ]

Accident

The time of the accident occurred when the event took place last Tuesday, February 20 at 3:00 p.m. (Venezuela local time) in Bolívar. [3] During the following hours, the rescue of multiple victims was carried out. At the moment, the number of people affected has not yet been confirmed and only an approximate number is available. [4] For this reason, it was reported that the Secretary of Citizen Security in Bolívar, Edgar Colina Reyes, went to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday the 21st. In addition, the Operational Zone for Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (Zoedan) of Bolívar provided a report in which it is reported that it is an open-pit “artisanal mine” where “some miners are found injured and walled up.”

A strong earthquake struck southern Ecuador on 18 March 2023. It measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale, and struck with a hypocenter 68.0 km (42.3 mi) deep. The epicenter was located in the Gulf of Guayaquil, just off the coast of the canton of Balao and some 80 kilometres (50 mi) south of the city of Guayaquil. It caused major damage, with 446 injuries and 16 fatalities in the provinces of El Oro, Azuay and Guayas, while two additional fatalities and dozens of injuries were reported in Peru.
