The Busitema University Faculty of Health Sciences (BUFHS), also known as the Busitema University Medical School (BUMS) and the Busitema University School of Medicine (BUSM), is the school of medicine of Busitema University, one of Uganda's public universities. [1] The medical school is one of the newer medical schools in the country, having been part of university since 2013. The school provides medical education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Location

The school's campus is on the premises of the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital on Pallisa Road in the central business district of the city of Mbale, in Uganda's Eastern Region. The campus is approximately 221 kilometres (137 mi), by road, north-east of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [3] The coordinates of the school are 1°04'55.0"N, 34°10'35.0"E (Latitude:1.081944; Longitude:34.176389). [4]

Overview

The school constitutes the Faculty of Health Sciences at Busitema University. The faculty is headed by Dean Professor Julius Wandabwa, who is deputized by Dr. Joseph Mpagi Luwaga. The teaching disciplines of the medical school are integrated with the regional referral hospital. The hospital's consultants, registrars, and interns collaborate in teaching the university's medical and nursing students. [5]

The degree is awarded after three years of pre-clinical instruction and examination in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, and pharmacology, followed by two years of clinical instruction and examination in general surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, psychiatry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, anesthesiology, urology, and public health.

The degree is awarded after four years of instruction and examination.

Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, commonly known as Mbale Hospital is a hospital in Mbale, Eastern Uganda. It is the referral hospital for the districts of Busia, Budaka, Kibuku, Kapchorwa, Bukwa, Butaleja, Manafwa, Mbale, Pallisa, Sironko and Tororo. The hospital also serves many more patients from outside the hospital's catchment area.

The medical school has been part of Makerere University since 1924. The school provides medical education at diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.

Makerere University School of Public Health (MUSPH) is one of the schools that comprise the Makerere University College of Health Sciences, a constituent college of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university.

Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) is a constituent college of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest university. The schools of the college offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the biomedical sciences, health sciences, human medicine and public health, covering a broad range of disciplines and specialties.

As of 2021, 11 universities in Uganda offer medical schools. Admission to medical school requires the candidate to have attained a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as well as proficiency in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at A-level standards. Training leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) lasts five years. Major examinations are conducted after the first, second and fifth year, with additional evaluations after each clinical rotation. After successful completion of the fifth year, candidates complete a year of internship under the supervision of specialists. Postgraduate training is available at Makerere University School of Medicine and other Public and Private Universities in a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The training takes three to four years and leads to the Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Health Sciences is nowadays another alternative postgraduate training pathway in Uganda, such as Membership [MCS (ECSA)] and Fellowship [FCS (ECSA)] of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA); as well as in Internal Medicine through the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSACOG) for Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Uganda Martyrs University School of Medicine, whose official name is Mother Kevin Postgraduate Medical School, is the school of medicine of Uganda Martyrs University. As of June 2014, the medical school is the newest medical school in Uganda, having been established in 2010. Currently the school provides postgraduate medical education in the disciplines of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Emergency Medicine.

Sarah Kiguli, MBChB, MMed (Pediatrics), MHPE, is a Ugandan pediatrician, academic, and medical researcher. She is a professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at the Makerere University School of Medicine, a component of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

The University of Malawi College of Medicine (UMCM), also Malawi College of Medicine in Blantyre, is a constituent college of the University of Malawi, the oldest and largest public university in the country. The college houses the Faculty of Medicine of the University, and is the only medical school in Malawi.
