Carnie Wilson: Unstapled is an American reality television show, starring game show hostess and singer Carnie Wilson. The show aired on Game Show Network (GSN) from January 14, 2010, to March 11, 2010. Filmed in southern California and produced by World of Wonder, the series chronicles the life of Wilson, host of GSN's The Newlywed Game , as she strives to lose excessive weight gained over the past decade. Wilson had a public fall out with the network after the series was broadcast and was criticized after gaining weight while on a diet featured on the show.

Format

The series focuses on the life of Carnie Wilson, [1] daughter of Brian Wilson, founder of the Beach Boys. [2] The show takes place at Wilson's residence in the Los Angeles area, and viewers see some of the struggles as she attempts to lose about 50 pounds after giving birth to her second child. [3] [4] [5] The series also depicts Wilson's attempt to balance her life as a game show hostess, entertainer, wife, and mother of two daughters. [6]

Former wrestler Diamond Dallas Page, Wilson's personal trainer and fitness guru, makes frequent appearances on the show. The "Unstapled" part of the show's title is a reference to Wilson's 1999 gastric bypass surgery. [7] [8] By 2001, Wilson had lost 150 pounds, [9] though she had regained much of it back by 2010, when the show was being filmed. [10] [11]

Wilson's diet program is featured on the show. She became a paid spokesperson for The Fresh Diet while on the show, and there was a controversy when Wilson gained weight while on that diet in 2010. [11] [12] [13]

Production

The series was green-lit in a Game Show Network (GSN) press release delivered on October 21, 2009. [6] Executive producers included Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey and Tom Campbell, while World of Wonder was the show's production company. [6] The show premiered on January 14, 2010. [14] While the network has been known for traditional game shows, Kelly Goode, the network's senior vice president for original programming and development, argued that the show made sense given viewers' positive response to Wilson on The Newlywed Game . [15] Wilson expressed excitement at the prospect of the show, saying, "It's a great message to send out for women, that we can multi-task, we can be a present mom and a present wife and try to keep our sanity." [16]

In July 2010, Wilson sued GSN, claiming she was owed $277,500 in extra pay for doing the show. [17] GSN, meanwhile, argued that Wilson failed to make scheduled appearances The Dr. Oz Show , Access Hollywood , and The Wendy Williams Show to promote the series. The two parties settled their dispute in 2012. [18]

Reception

In a series preview CNN's James Dinan argued that GSN would be better off focusing on traditional game shows in order for the network to avoid "losing its niche": "Perhaps GSN will learn that lesson and stay true to its original calling when this experiment comes to an end. Then again, I could see it following the leader and become [ sic ] just another channel." [20] Annie Barrett of Entertainment Weekly added, "The only way I'd watch...is if it were an animated tragicomedy series based on the Operation! board game." [21]

Boston.com's Matthew Gilbert argued that Wilson "[did] not come across well" and that the series was a "showcase for the kind of reality drama queenery that is becoming increasingly hard to bear." [22] A reviewer for Hollywood Junket was pleased with the series, writing, "The scenes are nicely tied-in with interviews of Wilson talking about her thoughts on her life's daily events as she speaks straight to the camera directly to viewers at home," and adding that provided the show preserved "naturalness," it was "sure to do well." [23] Despite expressing early optimism about the series, Wilson was unhappy after taping the show, saying, "[The producers] wanted me to get on the scale every day, and I didn't want to. I don't want to be known as the weight loss girl — that's not who I am. I'm also a singer, actress, mother and author." [24]

<i>GSN Live</i> American live television series

GSN Live is an American live interactive show on Game Show Network that premiered on February 25, 2008, at noon ET and officially ended its 3-year run on July 29, 2011. The last "live" edition aired May 13, 2011. It lasted three hours in between regular GSN programming and featured games that viewers played to win prizes over the phone, highlights from Classic game shows, interviews, behind-the-scenes views of GSN, and celebrity appearances. It was formerly hosted in two shifts. The first shift, from Noon to 3:00 p.m. ET was hosted by Heidi Bohay. Fred Roggin hosted the 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET segment. Kelly Packard co-hosted from September 15 to November 28, 2008, and Roggin co-hosted the 3 hours with rotating guest hosts until Debra Skelton was chosen to replace Packard on May 26, 2009, the same day the current set was introduced and when it was hosted by three people. Fred Roggin left GSN Live on July 2, 2009, Alfonso Ribeiro left GSN Live on August 11, 2009, Debra Skelton left GSN Live in January 2010, and Heidi Bohay left the show in April 2010, making Bob Guiney currently the sole host. The show was executive produced by Burt Dubrow until March 6, 2009, and is currently produced by John Berkson, Gary Green, and Laura Slobin. The sound mixer was Mike Dooley. Budget cuts implemented by the new GSN executive regime are causing the almost weekly dismissals of production staff members from the show. Due to these cuts the show was cut from six hours to three hours and now runs from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET. The staff was cut by 7 effective December 30, 2009, leaving the future of the show in question.

The Chase is an American television quiz show adapted from the British program of the same name. It premiered on August 6, 2013, on the Game Show Network (GSN). It was hosted by Brooke Burns and featured Mark Labbett as the "chaser". A revival of the show premiered on January 7, 2021, on ABC. It is hosted by Sara Haines and initially featured as the chasers Jeopardy! champions James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings, and Brad Rutter. Labbett returned as a chaser in June 2021, before stepping down in 2022 along with Jennings. In their place are Buzzy Cohen, Brandon Blackwell, and Victoria Groce.

<i>Family Trade</i> 2013 reality television series

Family Trade is an American reality television series broadcast by Game Show Network (GSN). The show premiered on March 12, 2013, its eighth and final episode aired on April 16, 2013. Filmed in Middlebury, Vermont, the series chronicles the daily activities of G. Stone Motors, a GMC and Ford car dealership that employs the barter system in selling its automobiles. The business is operated by its founder, Gardner Stone, his son and daughter, Todd and Darcy, and General Manager Travis Romano. The series features the shop's daily interaction with its customers, who bring in a variety of items that can be resold in order to receive a down payment on the vehicle they are leasing or purchasing. Commentary and narration are provided by the Stone family and Romano during the episodes.

<i>Beat the Chefs</i> American television series

Beat the Chefs is an American television cooking game show broadcast by Game Show Network (GSN) and hosted by Matt Rogers. The series features contestants preparing a home-cooked family recipe, while professional chefs Beau MacMillan, Antonia Lofaso and Jeff Henderson make the same recipe in an upscale restaurant version. The two dishes are then judged by a panel of food critics who are Christy Jordan and Brad A Johnson. The series premiered on August 23, 2012, and aired its last episode on November 26, 2012.
