Caroline Stam is a Dutch classical soprano who has an international (European) performing career specializing in baroque repertoire, reinforced by a distinguished presence in modern recordings (see below). [1]

Education

Stam studied voice at the Sweelinck Conservatory Amsterdam with Erna Spoorenberg, graduated with honours, and continued in master classes with Elly Ameling. [2]

Career

Stam has performed in recital in Germany, France, Spain and Great Britain with conductors such as Iván Fischer, David Willcocks and Ton Koopman. She appeared at the Festivals La Folle Journée in Nantes and the Bremer Bachfest. In 1995 she won first prize at the Grimsby International Competition in the categories Soprano as well as interpretation of French Lieder. [3]

On the opera stage she appeared as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute , Clarijn in Der Spiegel von Venedig of Hendrik Andriessen, Ninfa in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo , Belinda in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas , Dorinda in Handel's Orlando and Hélène in Chabrier's Une éducation manquée . [3] She performs baroque oratorio and passion-music often, for instance (2009) Bach's Christmas Oratorio , [4] St Matthew Passion [5] and St John Passion , Handel's Messiah , Israel in Egypt [6] and Jephtha , [6] and Classical works including Haydn's The Creation [7] and Theresienmesse [8] but also Romantic repertoire such as Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem . Stam sang as soloist in several sections of the project of Ton Koopman to record the complete vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, herself a member of the choir since it was founded in 1992. With them she had a part in the 1994 recording of Henry Purcell's opera The Fairy-Queen . [9] She is the principal soprano in Jos van Veldhoven's recording of the Bach St. John Passion with the Netherlands Bach Society. [10] In 2001, with the Utrecht Barok Consort under van Veldhoven at Utrecht and Amsterdam, she gave performances of the rarely heard oratorio La Morte di Abele (1732) by the Neapolitan Leonardo Leo. [11]

She records with Camerata Trajectina, for instance in Songs of Jacob Cats and Dutch Theatre Music 1600-1650, and with them took part in the 2006 recorded reconstruction of Johan Schenck's early opera Bacchus, Ceres & Venus, for Louis Peter Grijp. [12] She is also a soloist in the ongoing project Dieterich Buxtehude – Opera Omnia with Koopman to record the complete works of Dieterich Buxtehude, and took part in the presentation of the oratorio attributed to him, Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht under Koopman's direction at the Holland Festival of Early Music at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg for the Utrecht Festival in 2005. [13] She also participated in Koopman's reconstruction of Bach's St Mark Passion . [14]

<i>Membra Jesu Nostri</i>

Membra Jesu Nostri, BuxWV 75, is a cycle of seven cantatas composed by Dieterich Buxtehude in 1680, and dedicated to Gustaf Düben. The full Latin title Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima translates to "The most holy limbs of our suffering Jesus". This work is known as the first Lutheran oratorio. The main text are stanzas from the Medieval hymn Salve mundi salutare – also known as the Rhythmica oratio – a poem formerly ascribed to Bernard of Clairvaux, but now thought more likely to have been written by Medieval poet Arnulf of Leuven. It is divided into seven parts, each addressed to a different part of Christ's crucified body: feet, knees, hands, sides, breast, heart, and face. In each part, biblical words referring to the limbs frame verses of the poem.

Netherlands Bach Society Musical artist

The Netherlands Bach Society is the oldest ensemble for Baroque music in the Netherlands, and possibly in the world. The ensemble was founded in 1921 in Naarden to perform Bach's St Matthew Passion on Good Friday and has performed the work annually since then in the Grote of Sint-Vituskerk. From 1983 until 2018, Jos van Veldhoven was artistic director and conductor. Shunsuke Sato became artistic director on 1 June 2018.

Marius van Altena, born Marius Hendrikus Schweppe is a Dutch tenor. He was one of the pioneers of historically informed performance of Baroque and Renaissance music. He has also sung Baroque opera, worked as conductor and as an academic teacher.

Hana Blažíková is a Czech soprano and harpist. She is focused on Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music, appearing internationally. She has recorded as a member of the Bach Collegium Japan, among many others.

Bach cantatas (Koopman)

The Bach cantatas project of Ton Koopman was the first complete recording of all the cantatas, including the 21 secular cantatas. Koopman conducted the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir and guest solo singers. The project began in 1995 and was completed in 2005 on 67 CDs.
