Castbox is a Hong Kong-based podcast company. The company both hosts and produces its own podcasts.

Founding

Castbox was founded in 2016 by company CEO Renee Wang in Beijing, China. [1] [2] It also has offices in San Francisco and Hong Kong. [3]

App

Castbox is an app that distributes free podcasts. As of 2019, it has about one million podcasts available through it, [4] including about fifty million podcast episodes. [1] It also has a premium platform. [5] In June 2019, Castbox integrated with Waze, allowing playback controls to pause, skip, or restart episodes. [6]

Podcasts

In addition to its library of podcasts from other distributors, Castbox also produces its own shows. In 2018, Castbox partnered with Heard Well on the podcast series Heard Well Now, which highlights early career musical artists. [7] As of 2018, Castbox produced 25 different original podcasts, [8] [9] with This Sounds Serious being released in 2019. [10]

Funding

In 2017, the company raised $16 million, [11] and an additional $13.5 million in 2018. [5]

Google Cast is a proprietary protocol developed by Google for playing Internet-streamed audio/video content on a compatible consumer device. The protocol is used to initiate and control playback of content on digital media players, high-definition televisions, and home audio systems using a mobile device, personal computer, or smart speaker. The protocol was first launched on July 24, 2013, to support Google's first-generation Chromecast player. The Google Cast SDK was released on February 3, 2014, allowing third parties to modify their software to support the protocol. According to Google, over 20,000 Google Cast-ready apps were available as of May 2015. Support for Google Cast has since been integrated into subsequent devices, such as the Nexus Player and other Android TV devices, as well as soundbars, speakers, and later models of the Chromecast. Consumer devices that natively support the protocol are marketed as Chromecast built-in. As of October 2017, over 55 million Chromecasts and Chromecast built-in devices have been sold.

Acast is a Swedish-founded company that provides hosting, monetization and growth support to podcasts. In 2014, it developed a dynamic insertion technology which can target advertising within podcasts based on location, time, and personal data. Acast was founded by Karl Rosander and Måns Ulvestam in 2014; with Johan Billgren as co-founder, amongst others.

KaiOS is a mobile Linux distribution for keypad feature phones. It is developed by KaiOS Technologies Limited; a company based in Hong Kong, whose largest shareholder is Chinese multinational electronics conglomerate TCL Corporation. KaiOS runs on feature phones made with low-power hardware and low power consumption. KaiOS supports modern connectivity technologies like 4G LTE E, VoLTE, GPS, and Wi-Fi. KaiOS runs HTML5-based apps. KaiOS supports over-the-air updates and has a dedicated app marketplace (KaiStore). Some applications are preloaded, including Facebook and YouTube. Texture was a digital magazine app launched in 2012. The service had a monthly subscription fee that gave readers access to over 200 magazines. The service was established by Next Issue Media, a joint-venture between Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, Meredith Corporation, News Corp, Rogers Media, and Time Inc. Reading apps were available on iOS, Android and Kindle Fire HD. Rogers Communications brought the service to Canada in late 2013. The following year, a French version of the app was launched.
