Central Grocers Cooperative, founded in 1917 as Central Wholesale Grocers, [1] was a retailers' cooperative based in Joliet, Illinois, near Chicago. It distributed both brand name and private label goods branded as Centrella and Silver Cup Value Buy to about 400 member-owner grocery stores in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
It supplied several grocery stores in Indiana and Illinois, including Strack & Van Til (acquired in 1998 [2] ), Town & Country, Key Market, and Ultra Foods. It also purchased a number of former Cub Foods locations in the Chicago area, some of which it operated as Strack and Van Til and Ultra Foods. Also Gray's Foods in Rockford. Fellow co-op Certified Grocers Midwest merged into Central Grocers in 2008. [3] [4] Prior to 2009, the company was headquartered in Franklin Park, Illinois. [5] [6]
As of 2013, it was the seventh largest grocery cooperative in the United States, with over $2 billion on consolidated annual sales. [7]
On May 2, 2017, an involuntary petition under Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code was filed against Central Grocers, Inc., in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The petitioning creditors were The Coca-Cola Company, General Mills, Inc., Mars Financial Services, and Post Consumer Brands. On May 4, 2017, Central Grocers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and plans to close their distribution center and sell 22 of its Strack and Van Til stores, plus seven of its Ultra stores. SuperValu subsequently agreed to buy the distribution center. [8] [9]
Jewel-Osco is a regional supermarket chain in the Chicago metropolitan area, headquartered in Itasca, a western suburb. In 2007, the company had 188 stores across northern, central, and western Illinois; eastern Iowa; and portions of northwest Indiana. Jewel-Osco has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Boise-based Albertsons since 1999. The company originally started as a door-to-door coffee delivery service before it expanded into delivering non-perishable groceries and later into grocery stores, and supermarkets. Prior to its 1984 acquisition by American Stores, Jewel evolved into a large multi-state holding company that operated several supermarket chains and other non-food retail chain stores located from coast to coast and had operated under several different brand names.

Winn-Dixie operates more than 546 stores in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. The company has had its present name since 1955 and can trace its roots back to 1925.

Cub is an American supermarket chain. It operates stores in Minnesota and Illinois. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Natural Foods, based in Providence, Rhode Island.
The Penn Traffic Company was founded in 1854 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, United States, as a food service company for stagecoaches. It eventually became a general-merchandise department store but by the early 1960s had also returned to the food business through the acquisition of Super Value Corporation, operator of the 10-store Riverside supermarket chain. In 1982, the company sold its department stores and concentrated solely on the food and supermarket business. A series of financial troubles led to Penn Traffic's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in November 2009 and sale of assets to Tops Markets in early 2010.

It was founded in 1924 as Associated Grocers of Kansas City and was based in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Kansas City, Kansas. Associated Wholesale Grocers distributes four private-label brands of grocery products, Best Choice, Clearly Organic, Always Save, and Superior Selections along with IGA.
Certified Grocers Midwest was a retailers' cooperative serving independent supermarkets in six states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It was founded in 1940 and was a member of Retailer Owned Food Distributors & Associates. Many of its stores served the African American and Hispanic communities. It distributed Country's Delight brand bread, milk and ice cream as store brands along with Raggedy Ann and the Certified label. It merged into Central Grocers Cooperative in 2008. Central Grocers Cooperative went bankrupt in May 2017.

Southeastern Grocers is a supermarket portfolio headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. The portfolio was created by Lone Star Funds in September 2013 as the new parent company for Harveys, Winn-Dixie, and Fresco y Más. Southeastern Grocers was rated #31 in the Forbes 2015 ranking of America's Largest Private Companies. In February 2017, Anthony Hucker was appointed as president and CEO of Southeastern Grocers. On August 16, 2023, all Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores were sold to German supermarket chain Aldi, and all locations will either remain open under their respective brands or convert into the ALDI brand. SEG has also agreed to divest its Fresco y Más operations, via a sale of the banner that the company expects to close in the first quarter of 2024. The Fresco y Más banner, including all 28 stores and four pharmacies, will be sold to Fresco Retail Group LLC, an investment group focused on food and grocery. Fresco Retail Group, LLC plans for all stores and pharmacies in the Fresco y Más banner to continue operating as they are presently.
