The Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie is an academic and research institute based in Lyon, France.

Synopsis

The CIRI is composed of 22 teams gathered behind one goal: the fight against infectious diseases (which is the second cause of death worldwide) by "promoting in-depth conceptual and technological advances through approaches that span from fundamental to clinical/applied research." The key areas of expertise of the CIRI teams are bacteriology, immunology and virology. [1]

The CIRI contains a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory. [2]

History

The CIRI was created in 2013 by the Inserm, the CNRS, the ENS de Lyon and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in partnership with the Pasteur Institute, the Mérieux Foundation, the VetAgroSup and the Hospices Civils de Lyon. [1]

A BSL-4 laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology received significant and substantial support of the conceptual, engineering and logistical varieties from the CIRI. The WIV BSL-4 facility was commissioned in February 2015. [2]

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have specified these levels. In the European Union, the same biosafety levels are defined in a directive. In 2017, Shi and her colleague Cui Jie discovered that the SARS coronavirus likely originated in a population of cave-dwelling horseshoe bats in Xiyang Yi Ethnic Township, Yunnan. The Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences is a research institute on virology administered by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which reports to the State Council of the People's Republic of China. The institute is one of nine independent organisations in the Wuhan Branch of the CAS. Located in Jiangxia District, Wuhan, Hubei, it opened mainland China's first biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory. The institute has collaborated with the Galveston National Laboratory in the United States, the Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie in France, and the National Microbiology Laboratory in Canada. The institute has been an active premier research center for the study of coronaviruses.

Andrea Marzi is a German-American virologist. She is chief of the immunobiology and molecular virology unit at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories. Marzi investigates the pathogenesis of filoviruses and vaccine development. She received the Loeffler-Frosch medal in recognition of her research.

The COVID-19 lab leak theory is the proposal that SARS-CoV-2 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. Central to the idea is the fact that the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) is in the same city as the pandemic's earliest known outbreak. The theory gained support because of suspicions about the secrecy of the Chinese government's response. Scientists from WIV had previously collected SARS-related coronaviruses from bats; allegations that they also performed undisclosed risky work on such viruses is central to some versions of the idea. Some versions, particularly those alleging alteration of the SARS-CoV-2 genome, are based on speculation, misinformation, or misrepresentations of scientific evidence.
