Ceres was launched at Kolkata in August 1793 as Lutchmy and renamed in 1794. She sailed to England in 1798 and became a West Indiaman. She was condemned at Barbados in 1806. New owners returned her to service, first as a West Indiaman and then as an East Indiaman. She was damaged at Mauritius in 1818 and although she was listed until 1824, it is not clear that she sailed again after the damage she sustained in Mauritius.

Origin

Gabriel Gillet launched Lutchmy at Calcutta in August 1793. Her sale price, completely ready for sea, was 70,000 sicca rupees (Calcutta; approx. £7,000). [5] In 1794 she was renamed Ceres. [1]

Career

Ceres first appeared in Lloyd's Register (LR) in 1798 with Webb, master, Brockwood, owner, and trade London–Martinique. [4] Ceres, Webb, master, sailed from Gravesend on 15 October 1798, bound for Martinico. [6]

Action

In September 1804 Ceres, Bousfield, master, rendezvoused with Penelope, Robinson, master, off Cork, intending to sail with the Jamaica convoy, only to find that the convoy had left. They met up with Thetis, Marnley, master, and decided to proceed to the West Indies in company. The voyage was uneventful until they were one day out of Barbados. There they encountered a French privateer. An action developed in which the British merchantmen succeeded in driving off the privateer. They then gave pursuit and brought her to action again. The British succeeded in causing the privateer heavy casualties and such damage that she could not escape. However, the British did not have enough men to capture the privateer by boarding and so departed. The next day the British advised the Governor of Barbados of what had transpired. He reported that they had encountered the privateer Buonaparte, and dispatched the private man of war Barbadoes in pursuit. [7]

On his return to England, Bousfield discovered that Marnley, of Thetis, had claimed all the credit for the repulse of Bounaparte. Bousfield wrote a letter to the Naval Chronicle, including with his letter one from Captain Painpeny (Paimpéni), of Buonaparte, that acknowledged Ceres and Bousfields's role in the action. [8]

Condemnation

Ceres, Bousfield, master, left Cork on 28 October 1805 in a convoy for the West Indies under escort by HMS Fisgard and Wolverine. The same night bad weather separated the convoy, which regrouped at Madeira. [9] Fisgard collided with Ceres on 17 November off Madeira. Ceres was severely damaged and was declared a total loss on arrival at Barbadoes from London. [10] A report a month later confirmed that she had been condemned. [11] [12] The Register of Shipping (RS), for 1806 carried the annotation "condemned" by her name. [13]

Return to service

New owners apparently repaired Ceres and returned her to service.

In April 1807, Ceres, Palmer, master, sailed from London for Jamaica. On 18 May she sailed from Falmouth. [14] She had put into Falmouth because she had lost the convoy she had been travelling with. [15] She arrived at Barbados on 8 June and Jamaica on 17 June.

On her next voyage to Jamaica, Ceres, Palmer, master, had to put back after she had left Jamaica. [16] She had returned on 21 May 1808 because of leaks. [17]

In 1813 the EIC lost its monopoly on the trade between India and Britain. British ships were then free to sail under a license from the EIC to India, the Indian Ocean, or the East Indies. [18]

Ceres, Herd, master, sailed from England on 5 April 1817, bound for Bombay. [19]

On 1 March 1818 a gale hit Île de France, damaging several ships. Ceres, Heard, master, had been coming from Bengal and was driven onshore. She had cut away her mizzen mast and was leaking badly. [20]

Fate

Ceres was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1823 and in the Register of Shipping in 1824. Although she continued to be listed in the registers, it is not clear that she sailed again after the damage she had received in the gale at Mauritius.

USS Herald was a full-rigged ship of about 270 tons burthen built in 1797 at Newburyport, Massachusetts. The US Navy purchased her on 15 June 1798, and sold her in 1801. She became the French 20-gun privateer corvette Africaine. In 1804 a British privateer seized her on 4 May 1804 off the coast, near Charleston, South Carolina. The seizure gave rise to a case in the U.S. courts that defined the limits of U.S. territorial waters. The U.S. courts ruled that the privateer had seized Africaine outside U.S. jurisdiction. Africaine then became a Liverpool-based slave ship that made two voyages carrying slaves from West Africa to the West Indies. After the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 she became a West Indiaman that two French privateers captured in late 1807 or early 1808.

HMS Pert was the French privateer Bonaparte, a ship built in the United States that HMS Cyane captured in November 1804. The Royal Navy took Bonaparte into service as HMS Pert. Pert was wrecked off the coast of what is now Venezuela in October 1807.

Asia was launched at Philadelphia. Early records have her launch year as 1795, but later records have it as 1798. She entered British records in 1800 as trading with the Far East. As the British East India Company had a monopoly of British trade with the Far East, Asia almost certainly did not sail under the British flag, though she did operate from Britain. In 1805 the privateer Mercury seized her and the High Court of Admiralty condemned Asia for trading with France. New owners named her Duchess of York. She then became a West Indiaman. She was wrecked at Guadeloupe in 1826.

Alligator was launched in 1793 at London. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC). She then became a general trader crossing the Atlantic. She was wrecked in 1820.

Peggy was built at Calcutta in 1793 and initially sailed in the Indian coastal and Far East trade. In 1801 she assumed British registry and her name was changed to Juliana. Her owners sold her to the Transport Board but in 1804 the government resold her and she was sailing as a West Indiaman between London and Antigua. She then made two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), and one voyage to Hobart, Van Dieman's Land, transporting convicts. On her return from this voyage she wrecked in 1821 on the English coast.

Kingsmill was a French vessel launched in 1793 under a different name, captured in 1798, and sold to British owners who renamed her. She then became a slave ship, making three voyages from Africa to the West Indies. A French privateer captured her in 1804, but she returned to her owners in 1804. In 1807 she became a West Indiaman. In 1814 she became the first ship to trade with India under a license from the British East India Company (EIC) after the EIC lost its monopoly on British trade with India. She was badly damaged in 1821 and subsequently disappears from the registers.

Etingdon was launched in 1798 as a Jamaicaman. She first appeared in Lloyd's Register (LR) in 1799 under the name Elingdon with T. Wilson, master, Hayman, owner, and trade London–Jamaica.

Sylph was launched at Whitby in 1791. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC) to New South Wales and China. However, a French privateer captured her in 1798 as she was returning to England.

Cambridge was launched at Whitby in 1797. She traded with New York, and then with Jamaica. In 1805 a French privateer captured her, but the British Royal Navy recaptured her shortly thereafter and she returned to her trade as a West Indiaman. In 1810 she sustained damage while sailing from Jamaica to Liverpool and was condemned at Havana.

Lady Banks was launched in 1810 at Boston. After some voyages as a transport and West Indiaman she sailed to India under a license from the British East India Company. She was condemned at Mauritius in 1821. However, a local merchant repaired and purchased her and sailed her to China.

Busiris was launched at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1814 as a West Indiaman. She made one voyage as an East Indiaman and then returned to the West Indies trade. She was wrecked in May 1826.

Brook Watson was launched in 1796, probably in Holland but possibly in Denmark. She became a prize in 1801 and by 1802 was a whaler in the British Southern Whale Fishery. She made two whaling voyages between 1802 and 1806. She then became a West Indiaman and was last listed in 1809 or 1810.

Starling was built at Harwich in 1802. She traded with Smyrna for some years and then became a West Indiaman. In 1810 a French privateer captured her, but the Royal Navy recaptured her within days. After the British East India Company lost its monopoly on the trade between Britain and India, Starling started trading to the Cape of Good Hope. She wrecked in 1815 off the English coast as she returned from a voyage to Batavia.

Aurora was launched at Chester in 1793 as a West Indiaman. During her career first the French (twice) and then the United States captured her, but she returned to British hands. Between 1801 and 1808 she made four voyages as a slave ship. She continued to trade widely until 1831.

Bellona was launched at Lancaster in 1799. She was a West Indiaman that made one voyage as a whaler. She disappeared in 1809 as she was returning to England from Jamaica.

Sally was launched in 1782 at Liverpool as a West Indiaman. She made one voyage as a whaler and one as an East Indiaman sailing to Bengal under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). After a storm damaged her in 1805 as she was on her way in 1805 from Liverpool to Africa as a slave ship she had to put into Barbados where she was condemned.

Fame was launched in India in 1786. She was sold to Portuguese owners. A French privateer captured but the Royal Navy recaptured her in 1794. She then became a West Indiaman, sailing from Liverpool. Between 1796 and 1804 she made three voyages as a slave ship. She then returned to the West Indies trade. From 1818 on she was a whaler in the Greenland whale fishery, sailing from Whitby and then Hull. She burnt in 1823 while outward bound on a whaling voyage.

Flora was built in 1798 at Yarmouth. She was captured early in her career and quickly recaptured. She traded to the Mediterranean and the Bahamas. She was last listed in 1813.

Willerby was launched in 1799 as a West Indiaman. French privateers captured her around early 1802, but then released her. She suffered damage in a gale in 1815, but continued to trade. She sailed to New South Wales and was wrecked in early 1818.
