Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, Kannada Film Industry or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film Sati Sulochana directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded South India Movietone in Bangalore.

Yaragudipati Varada Rao was an Indian film actor, screenwriter, director, editor, and producer, known for his works primarily in the Telugu cinema, Kannada cinema, and Tamil Cinema. The Dr. Vishnuvardhan Award, instituted in 2011 for the 2008–09 Karnataka State Film Awards is an award given by the government of Karnataka to long-serving film personalities in Kannada cinema. The award previously called Lifetime Contribution to Kannada Cinema Award, was named Dr. Vishnuvardhan Award in honour of Vishnuvardhan, one of Kannada cinema's most celebrated actors, after his demise in 2009. The award carries a purse of ₹200,000 and a gold-plated plaque.

Mysore Venkatappa Subbaiah Naidu was an Indian stage artiste in the silent movies era. He was an actor and director, well known for the movies Sati Sulochana (1934) in Kannada, which was also the first Kannada talkie, Bhookailas in Telugu and Bhakta Prahlada (1958) in Kannada. He acted in the first Kannada movie and brought distinction to Kannada cinema. He was the father of Kannada actor Lokesh and the grandfather of Kannada TV personality Srujan Lokesh. Recognizing his work in theatre, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1961.
Deepti Sati is an Indian film actress and model who predominantly appears in Malayalam films. She has also appeared in Kannada, Marathi and Telugu films. She was crowned Miss Kerala in 2014.
Hirannaiah or Hirannayya known by his stage name Master Hirannaiah was an Indian film actor in the Kannada film industry and a theatre artist in Karnataka, India. Tripuramba (1910–1979) was an Indian theatre and film actress-singer who worked in Kannada films. She is best remembered for her role Sulochana in the first Kannada talkie Sati Sulochana, released in 1934, which made her the first heroine of Kannada cinema.
