Charles Richard-Hamelin (born 17 July 1989) is a Canadian concert pianist from Joliette, Quebec. [1] [2]
Richard-Hamelin was born in Lanaudière, Quebec, [3] and took his first piano lessons with his father. [1] He studied at McGill University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 2011. He completed his master's degree at Yale School of Music in 2013. [4]
In 2014, Richard-Hamelin won second prize at the Montreal International Musical Competition and third prize at the Seoul International Music Competition in South Korea. The next year, he participated in the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition (Warsaw, 2015), where he received the silver medal [5] [6] [7] and the Krystian Zimerman Prize for the best performance of a sonata. [8] [9] He also received the most prize money in the competition. [10] [11]
Richard-Hamelin then toured across Canada, mainly performing works by Chopin. [12] The Fryderyk Chopin Institute later released a two-disc album of his audition performances for the competition. [13] He also completed three concert tours in Japan. [14]
In 2016 he received the Choquette-Symcox Award, conferred by the JM Canada Foundation and Jeunesses Musicales Canada, accompanied by a $5,000 excellence scholarship, [15] and participated in a Jeunesses Musicales Canada tour in Quebec and Ontario. [16]
In 2018 Richard-Hamelin and Andrew Wan released an album, Beethoven: Violin Sonatas Nos. 6, 7 & 8; [17] in 2019 it was nominated for a Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year. [18] In February 2019, Richard-Hamelin gave a solo performance at Koerner Hall in Toronto, which was recorded by CBC Radio 2. [3]

The International Chopin Piano Competition, often referred to as the Chopin Competition, is a piano competition held in Warsaw, Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years since 1955. It is one of the few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer, in this case, Frédéric Chopin. The competition is currently organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.

Garrick Olaf Ohlsson is an American classical pianist. In 1970 Ohlsson became the first, and remains the only, competitor from the United States to win the gold medal awarded by the International Chopin Piano Competition, at the VIII competition. He also won first prize at the Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy and the Montreal Piano Competition in Canada. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and received the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ohlsson has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning one in 2008.
Janina Fialkowska, is a Canadian classical pianist. A specialist of the Classic and Romantic repertoires, for more than thirty years she has appeared regularly with professional orchestras around the world, often performing the music of Chopin, and also contemporary Polish composers including Lutosławski and Panufnik. In 1990, she gave the world premier performance of the recently discovered Franz Liszt Third Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Fou Ts'ong was a Chinese-born British pianist who was the first pianist of his national origin to achieve international recognition. Daniil Olegovich Trifonov is a Russian pianist and composer. Described by The Globe and Mail as "arguably today's leading classical virtuoso" and by The Times as "without question the most astounding pianist of our age", Trifonov's honors include a Grammy Award win in 2018 and the Gramophone Classical Music Awards' Artist of the Year Award in 2016. Seong-Jin Cho is a South Korean pianist. He rose to fame within South Korea and the international classical music world in 2015 after winning the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition, becoming the first pianist from his country to do so.
Kate Liu is a Singaporean American classical pianist. On October 20, 2015 she won the third prize and the Polish Radio Award for the best performance of mazurkas in the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland.

The XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition was held from 2 to 23 October 2021 in Warsaw. Originally scheduled for 2020, the quinquennial competition was twice postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The III International Chopin Piano Competition was held from 21 February to 13 March 1937 in Warsaw. It was the last competition before the outbreak of World War II, and the competition would not be held again until 1949.
The II International Chopin Piano Competition was held from 6 to 23 March 1932 in Warsaw. Popular with the public, it attracted correspondents from all over the world, not least because of the high-profile composition of the competition jury. Soviet pianist Alexander Uninsky was awarded the first prize, after winning a coin toss against Imre Ungár, who was awarded second place.
Bruce Liu is a Canadian pianist. Born in Paris and raised in Montreal, he began to play the piano at eight years old and was performing by the age of eleven. In 2021, he rose to widespread renown after winning the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition.
