Charlotte McKane (born May 7, 1995) is an American college student known for community service work. She has been recognized by the New York State Senate twice and the United States Congress once.

Charlotte's Circle

Charlotte's Circle is a service learning project that helps several organizations in the local community. This ongoing project has raised over $70,000 to date [1] in funds to help local organizations. The project currently serves Family Service Association, Opportunities for Otsego's Violence Intervention Program and Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties. In the past, the project also served the A. O. Fox Hospital Memorial Hospital's Psychiatric Ward until it closed in 2006. [1]

McKane gives presentations about her project, poverty, and activism to clubs and organizations. [2] [3] She has also run workshops and been part of panel discussions at Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta concerning activism and volunteerism. [4]

In January 2013, a transition process was started to transfer the project to two families with small children so that the project can continue after McKane leaves the area to go to college. The transition process will be complete by June 2013. [5]

Recognition

Prudential Spirit of Community Award

Charlotte McKane was named one of New York state's top two youth volunteers for 2009, receiving the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, as part of a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. Prudential Financial, in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), administered the 14th annual award on February 10, 2009. [6] McKane received a $1,000 award, an engraved medallion and an all expenses paid trip to Washington DC. [6] The award winners were honored by former First Lady Laura Bush at a ceremony at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. [7]

New York State Senate

Charlotte McKane was recognized by New York Senator James L. Seward (New York) on March 23, 2009 for receiving the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Seward praised her for raising funds to support Catholic Charities, Opportunities for Otsego’s Violence Intervention Program, the Family Service Association, and similar charities organizations. [8]

Build-a-Bear Huggable Heroes Award

McKane was also one of twelve citizens nationwide to be selected for the 2006 Build-A-Bear Huggable Heroes award, a national community service award whose winners are featured in a calendar. It was created to reward kids for their outstanding acts of generosity and volunteerism and encourage other kids to do the same. [9] [10]

Trailblazer Award

On April 16, 2013, McKane received the Trailblazer Award from the City of Oneonta, New York. The Trailblazer Award is presented to a woman in the Oneonta area who, by demonstrating outstanding achievement in her field or in the community, has enhanced the visibility and stature of women. The winners are chosen by the city Commission on Community Relations and Human Rights. [11] A special exception was made and there were two awards given in 2013: one to McKane who was recognized in the Young Leader and Community Service category, and the other to Sarah Patterson in the Career and Community Achievement category. McKane is the youngest woman to ever receive the award. [12]

Personal life

McKane was the Oneonta representative at the 2012 Empire Girls State run by the American Legion Auxiliary held at SUNY Brockport and was elected to the office of governor. She is the only Empire Girls State Governor to ever come from Otsego County. [16]

Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad

The Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad Company is a heritage railroad in New York operated by the Leatherstocking Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) since 1996.

New York State Route 23 (NY 23) is an east–west state highway in the eastern portion of New York in the United States. It extends for 156.15 miles (251.30 km) from an intersection with NY 26 in the Central New York town of Cincinnatus to the Massachusetts state line in the Berkshire Mountains, where it continues east as that state's Route 23. Along the way, it passes through many communities, including the cities of Norwich and Oneonta. Outside of the communities, the route serves largely rural areas of the state and traverses the Catskill Mountains in the state's Central New York Region. NY 23 crosses the Hudson River at Catskill via the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.

The Delaware Otsego Corporation (DO) is an American railway holding company which owns the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway and the Central New York Railroad. It is headquartered in Cooperstown, New York in Otsego County.

New York State Route 357 (NY 357) is a 14.02-mile-long (22.56 km) state highway in New York, running from NY 7 in the Otsego County village of Unadilla to NY 28 in the Delaware County town of Franklin.

New York State Route 205 (NY 205) is a 23.24-mile-long (37.40 km) north–south state highway in central Otsego County, New York, in the United States. It extends from Interstate 88 (I-88) at exit 13 near the city of Oneonta to a junction with NY 28 and NY 80 in the town of Otsego. The latter junction also marks the east end of a 2.1-mile (3.4 km) overlap between NY 205 and NY 80, from where NY 80 heads southeast to follow NY 28 to Cooperstown. NY 205 is a two-lane highway for its entire length and passes through the towns of Oneonta, Laurens and Hartwick.

James L. Seward is a Republican New York State Senator since 1987. Seward was first elected to represent the 50th District in 1986. As of January 2020, he represents the 51st District, which consists of Schoharie, Otsego, and Cortland Counties, as well as parts of Tompkins, Herkimer, Chenango, Cayuga, Delaware, and Ulster Counties.

121st New York Volunteer Infantry

The 121st Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry, commonly known as the "Onesers" or "Upton's Regulars", was a volunteer regiment recruited during the American Civil War from Otsego County and Herkimer County, New York. The Hon. Richard Franchot was appointed colonel of the regiment and authorized to establish his headquarters at Richfield Springs, Otsego County. He proceeded without delay to organize the regiment, and on August 23, 1862, the regiment was mustered into the service of the Union Army. The command at that time consisted of 39 officers and 946 enlisted men. The 121st Regiment proceeded to Washington, arriving there on the morning of September 3, and was assigned provisionally to a brigade under Colonel Gibson with headquarters at Fort Lincoln.

Haley Moss is a contemporary American pop art artist, author and advocate for children with disabilities. Diagnosed at age three with high-functioning autism, she has been recognized by Project Lifesaver, University of Miami, Dan Marino Foundation, "Hope for Children" and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) for her efforts, talents and philanthropy.

Jen Rubino is the founder of the American charity Cards for Hospitalized Kids which helps seriously ill children through handmade cards. Rubino's own experiences in the hospital inspired her to start CFHK. She has shared her story and that of her charity, Cards for Hospitalized Kids, in publications around the USA and world. Rubino attended Maine South High School and is now a student at George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Springbrook is a not-for-profit organization located in Oneonta, New York. Initially, Springbrook was opened as an orphanage in 1925 by Harriet Parish Smith and was known as the Upstate Baptist Home for Children. The home was established on a working 95-acre farm and also provided its young residents with an education.

Founded in 2007 by Jurnee Carr, the organization Jurnee's Journey: Helping All God’s Creations has provided over $48,000 in support to non-profit no-kill animal rescue groups locally, nationally, and internationally. She has spoken to over 400,000 people about animal issues. Carr has been actively involved with The Humane Society of the United States since 2009. She served on their Youth Advisory Board from 2009–2012, and was an intern at their corporate headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland in summer 2015. Carr was asked by the Tennessee State Director of The Humane Society of the United States to be a volunteer district leader.

Shadow Brook

Shadow Brook, also known as East Springfield Brook, is a river in northern Otsego County in the U.S. State of New York. It begins north-northeast of the Hamlet of East Springfield, and flows into Otsego Lake south-southeast of the Hamlet of Springfield Center, near Glimmerglass State Park. It is the largest watershed in the Otsego Lake basin.
