Children of the Snow Land is a 2019 Nepalese English feature documentary film written and directed by Zara Balfour, and Marcus Stephenson. The film is produced by Zara Balfour and Marcus Stephenson, and Executive Produced by Christopher Hird. The documentary stars Nima Gurung, Sangpo Lama, Tsering Deki Lama, and Jeewan Mahatara in the lead roles. The documentary is about education in Nepal. [1] The film premiered at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF). [2] It was released in UK cinemas with over 60 screenings nationwide, was shown on TV channels worldwide including Arte, BBC, Nippon and more, it won the BIFA Raindance Discovery Award, [3] and 25 awards at film festivals worldwide, including Best Documentary at the Victoria Film Festival and London Independent Film Festival. This film was the catalyst for director Zara Balfour to start an NGO, Snowland Journeys, to support the Nepalese children and communities featured in the film, which has Dame Joanna Lumley [5] as patron.

Synopsis

In remote parts of Nepal parents are sending their children to a school run by Buddhist monks in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal hoping to give them a better life. For about ten or more years the children's do not see their parents nor speak to them. Three students including Nima, Sangpo, and Tsering trek back to Himalayas their parents are waiting for them to be raised on the world of technology. Whilst trekking they film themselves and speak to the camera about their thoughts and feelings. Nima describes how his father dropped him at the school with even saying goodbye which made his heartbreak.

Critical response

The film received praise from critics and audiences. Cath Clarke of The Guardian wrote, "You can count the miles. But with enormous sensitivity the film observes the distance these bright, confident city kids have travelled from poverty," giving it a rating of three out of five. [7] Nigel Andrews of Financial Times wrote, "It’s a wonderfully touching documentary", "And almost a proof that everyone has a story — even a film — inside his or her life." [8] Brady Clark of The Upcoming wrote, "...the tragedy of the documentary is equalled with the warmth of family and the optimism of its subjects." and gave the film three stars out of five. [9]

Conrad Anker is an American rock climber, mountaineer, and author. He was the team leader of The North Face climbing team for 26 years until 2018. In 1999, he located George Mallory's body on Everest as a member of a search team looking for the remains of the British climber. Anker had a heart attack in 2016 during an attempted ascent of Lunag Ri with David Lama. He was flown via helicopter to Kathmandu where he underwent emergent coronary angioplasty with a stent placed in his proximal left anterior descending artery. Afterwards he retired from high altitude mountaineering, but otherwise he continues his work. He lives in Bozeman, Montana.

Kagbeni is a 2008 Nepali movie, loosely based on W. W. Jacobs's 1902 horror short story The Monkey's Paw. Kagbeni is the directorial debut of Bhusan Dahal. The name of the movie is taken from a tourist place Kagbeni situated in the valley of the Kali Gandaki, which is a 2-hour side trek from Muktinath. Kagbeni is considered to be a movie which changed the way people look at Nepali cinema, because it is seen as first successful non-commercial movie in Nepal which was able to leave its mark in the film industry. In present time, non-commercial movies are often described as 'post- Kagbeni era films' by Nepali critics. Kagbeni was one of the few Nepali films during its time to manifest cinematography as one of the important elements in cinema.

The Great Himalaya Trail is a route across the Himalayas from east to west. Sunakali is a 2015 documentary film directed by Bhojraj Bhat and produced by Good Neighbours Nepal. Sunakali is about a girls' football team that overcomes all obstacles to play football, finally attaining glory. It stars local girls from the Mugu district of remote Nepal which also lies in a mountainous region. Bhat's interest in the subject matter rose from this journalistic experience and an opportunity to highlight the aspects of the majority of Nepalese society that thwart their progress. Production began in early 2000 with Bhat covering the Maoist insurgency in remote areas of Nepal. Upon its release, Sunakali received tremendous acclaim and awards from all over the world. It has received awards like Best Documentary Diamond Award and has been officially selected at Kendal Mountain Film Festival. Bidhya Chapagain is a Nepalese journalist. She is also a presenter of Herne Katha, a television web series started March 2018.

"Melancholy" is an environmentally-themed song sung by 365 Nepali artists. This song was intended to promote an environmental message by breaking the Guinness World Records for "Most Vocal Solos in a Song Recording", which it successfully did. It was written, music composed and directed by environmentalist Nipesh Dhaka. The song was recorded as a single on 19 May 2016. The recording sessions were inaugurated by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli at 8 am and continued until 6 pm. The song was released on 2 September 2017 by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at Army Officer's Club, Kathmandu.

Shambhala is an upcoming drama film directed by Min Bahadur Bham on screenplay co-written by him. The film starring Thinley Lhamo and Sonam Topden, depicts life of a newly married and pregnant Pema, living in a Himalayan polyandrous village in Nepal. After disappearance of her first husband she embarks on a journey into the wilderness to find him, evolving into a quest of self-discovery and liberation.
